Hello,

I would appreciate any advice concerning taking courses at a different community college. I recently was admitted to U.C. Berkeley for the Fall 2010 semester. I currently live in San Jose, but I would like to take two Political Science prerequisites over the summer at Santa Monica College; however, it is around 335 miles away from my home. If I do decide to take those courses, I would have to find a place to live there for eight weeks, and then move back home.

What are your opinions?

housing near the samo area is expensive…look into culver or maybe venice…

if they offer it at sbcc, they have dorms there

Unfortunately, Santa Barbara City College does not offer the Political Science courses I need.

Why SMC specifically? We have so many colleges- De Anza, Foothill, Ohlone, Mission, West Valley, etc…? They don’t offer the two pre reqs?

I plan to take Political Science courses Comparative Politics and International Relations over the summer before transferring to U.C. Berkeley. Unfortunately, other colleges do not offer those courses.

You’re a little late. Almost every single class at my cc is full already for summer.

I already registered for Political Science Comparative Politics and International Relations at Santa Monica College. I am not sure whether there are other closer community colleges.

that really sounds like the description of my polisci 10 class at el camino right now…you could find a room in hawthorne/torrance area easily.

Check Skyline/CSM/Canada College one of them may offer it during the summer.

If you end up having to go to SMC, I’d definitely look into subletting in Culver City. Fairly close and usually much cheaper than living in Santa Monica.

I think it’s a great idea and I admire your go getter attitude. Find a sublease asap though. The Los Angeles area is REALLY big but you would be surprised how far you can commute. What time are your classes? Do you have any friends in LA?

Make sure you bring your car or you will have to live VERY close to the school and it will be much more expensive.

If you look around you will be able to find rooms walking distance to SMC for less than $700/month. A bit pricey, sure, but I’d say it’s the same as (even beats) paying rent + gas somewhere else.

The best and easiest place you will be able to find a sublet lease is Westwood (since a lot of the UCLA kids go away during the summer). It’s still expensive and it takes about 10-15 minutes to drive to SMC (local) but if worst comes to worst, you should check the place out.

As for actually taking the course, do you HAVE to take them over the summer? I mean, if you have options, you know? Maybe you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars just to take two courses…?

Thank you very much for your positive remarks, whatasunnyday.

I would prefer to take those two courses in order to be declared as a Political Science at Berkeley. It would not cost too much because I will be rooming with a friend that attends UCLA.
