Hey guys, I’m looking to transfer into UT this coming fall and would like some advice to boost my chances into getting accepted into computer science.
Academic Record:
Current Year: Sophomore
Current School : University of Houston
Previous School: (A&M w/ 4.0)
GPA : ~3.8 by the end of this semester
High School Record ( probably less important, but I’ll still include this)
Class ranking: Top 5% in class
SAT Score : 1990/2400
Extracurricular Record:
Nothing ( save for a couple of volunteering activities)
Based on previous posts on this thread, it feels like that the odds of me getting in are moderately low, as I have a decent/average academic standing, but nothing outstanding outside of that.
I would like some advice/tips on what I could do in order to improve my chances of getting into UT. I feel pretty anxious on whether I can successfully transfer so it would help if you guys gave any advice that would improve my odds of getting in. Feel free to pm me, ask for any other information on my academic record, or anything else in general!
My son did an internal transfer, but I will tell you what he did to improve his chances. Obviously the higher the GPA the better. Look as the CS degree plan and try to take as many of the classes you can that will transfer and fulfill the requirements. For example, the semester before he applied he took all the maths and statistics required for the CS degree. They want people who can graduate in 4 years, so this helps you look better as a candidate.
Would any classes I take during winter break or during the spring semester be taken account when reviewing my application? I’m currently two semesters ahead in my degree plan in terms overall credit, but I skipped calculus 3, would it be recommended to take it next semester if possible?
I’m not sure of the answer so this is ONLY my opinion. It sure won’t hurt to take it. I’m sure they would look at any winter minimester classes and grades. Since my son was an internal transfer, his spring grades/classes were looked at. Not sure if that would be different for external since you would already have the required hours. My guess would be if they denied you before those grades were released, you could appeal and ask them to look at them.
I’m curious how you guys think the odds of me getting in are. Do they by any chance take into consideration the college you’re transferring from?(My 3.8 from UH vs 4.0 at a community college) And how much do you guys believe essays impact the overall admissions decision into CNS?
