Does anyone write for the school newspaper? I want to join the club but I want to prepare first before joining.

What should of advice do you have for someone that wants to write?

I want to write for the science section specifically. What kind of articles should I write? Should I write an opinion piece or write about a recent science advance? Do I have to write cite sources and publish it with the sources (Like APA citation) or just do intext citation?

I write for the on-campus and community sections of my school’s newspaper. I’m not a journalism major, so I just sent an email to one of the editors and mentioned that I was interested in writing but had no experience, and they just started assigning me stories. However, our editors assign all of the stories, so it’s entirely possible that you won’t have any say in your topics. Your citation question can be answered by reading science journalism articles and becoming familiar with the format (not trying to be snarky; I’m not familiar with science journalism, and my first editor told me to learn by reading other articles).

Strange. I think this works differently in every school. In my school’s paper, we look over articles that people wrote and edit them. However, we do assign stories to our reporters time to time if we feel it’s especially relevant to the school.

It’s strange that they said that, especially since you have no experience. Perhaps they thought you specialized in something?

In our meetings we mostly give out suggestion and ideas, and everyone usually gets a say in their topics.

Like I said before, every school is probably different.
