I got a good fin aid package at one of my top choices but it isnt enough, I sent them a letter to reconsider my package but it didnt work out. Im thinking on sending a reconsideration form this time, since I applied we've been having some medical expenses, not super exorbitant amounts, but considerable amounts according to our budget. Should I insist?

International students usually do not have their full need met anyway.

You could send written documentation via fax of medical expenses and see if it makes any difference, highly unlikely though. Medical expenses to be considered would be in the year of 2010, not 2011.

You need to also keep in mind…some schools will NOT reconsider financial aid awards, and some will. This is completely at the discretion of the schools. Most of the money you are looking at is institutional money. It is the school’s decision whether or not to award you more money.

While you are asking for reconsideration for a second time…come up with a Plan B…either a way for you to come up with the additional money or a less expensive college option.

Asking them to reconsider, in the first place, was a big mistake. Financial aid officers are terribly weary of any situation that appears to be a call to negotiate or, to use your word, “reconsider” something that they’ve already given quite a bit of thought.

Normally, one should broach the topic by requesting a quick education on the protocol for submitting an appeal. Phrasing it this way couches the the control on their side, which keeps them comfortable, and opens a dialogue that could benefit you.
