Not many kids from my schools really go far for school, so i don't really have many people to get advice from and i have grown curious. I am thinking about EA to Harvard but if i don't really have a shot i want to ea or ed to another school. So my question is should I try to EA?

I am from a lower middle class family ( combined income around 70,000) and a small private school with few kids leaving Tennessee for college

For some reason I have a feeling you’re in West Tennessee. I know the Harvard admissions counselor told us last year for the class of 2015 he would be turning a close eye to our region in particular because it is so underrepresented. I’m assuming that would apply to all of Tennessee (not just middle where I reside.) You’re a very strong applicant for Tennessee, and if you let your personality shine in the essays you’ll have a better chance than what most people on these boards will tell you. Also establish a rapport with the admissions counselor for this region somehow. If it’s the same guy as the one I met, he’s awesome and made me want to apply to Harvard (though I didn’t want the SAT IIs.) Give it your best shot and you’ll never know if you don’t apply. Meanwhile keep your grades up, make your senior wonderful, and maybe take another ACT to really get your foot in the door at the first application look. I never thought I’d be attending UPenn in the fall, and though Harvard is a whole 'nother beast, I can say you’re a stronger applicant. Make sure to apply to Vandy and Duke;)

You sound like a strong candidate and i think EA would help your chances, but remember even with all that you still only have about a 20% chance so dream big but have a solid back up.

just out of curiosity what would you be majoring in? your ECs sound impressive but eclectic.

@chillgen can i ask how one goes about getting in touch with their admissions counselor? I have no idea how to do that and I too am really hoping to apply to Harvard EA.

Thanks so much!

Harvard is a bit picky and doesn’t list their counselors online, so you’ll have to call admissions. Make sure though to attend some college fair where Harvard will be represented. The best, and where I met my counselor at Penn, is Exploring College Options in the fall. You, being the top student you are, should get an invite a bit after school starts, or just Google it. Once you get there, hang out afterwards and mingle, but make sure to gain an audience with the Harvard rep. You’d be surprised how far a good impression at one of those things can go. Also make sure to visit some of the other counselors, I went expecting to learn more about Duke, but ended up falling in love with UPenn.
