Planning a Saturday afternoon tour of U Del with my junior daughter. After the tour, we'd like to explore the college town and get a feel for college life at U Del.

Any suggestions for what to see/do? Fun restaurants? We will have a car.

Thanks!

I don’t know where the tour takes you, but I’d be sure to get over to see the Laird campus to see where the housing is. If you want to get a feel of what it’s like, I’d start at one end of main St., walk all the way down and then back on the other side. There are lots of places to eat. I’d pick one that just looks good to you. Have fun!

The restaurant we like best is Iron Hill Brewery on Main St. Once you’ve gotten to UD and parked you won’t need your car again until you leave. If you get tired of walking, or if the weather isn’t good, there are campus shuttle buses that take you just about everywhere. Enjoy!

There are several restaurants on main street that are somewhat upscale in nature. They have tables outside on the sidewalks in front. If the weather is good I would suggest getting an outside table, have a nice dinner, and just observe as students pass by. You can get a good feel for what the student body is like as student traffic here is always high. Make sure you see both student centers, Trabant and Perkins, the library, and the bookstore (the tour will probably take you to these places). The college campus is one of the most beautiful on the east coast. I’m sure you will love it.

Make sure you get cupcakes at SAS on Main Street! There’s also an Irish pub right down the block (Rooney’s or something) with truly excellent food. If you’re up that way, stop into the Old College Building to see the UD collection.

every time i visit the university of delaware, my family and i eat lunch at klondike kate’s on main street. a lot of college kids go there so you get a feel for what UD kids are like. and the food’s delicious and affordable i recommend it! they also have a website so you could look at the menu (just google it)

The end of the tour we took was at the Perkins Student Center/bookstore. If that is where your tour ends, plan to take a break there & grab a snack. The students call it the Scrunge, or something like that.

Again, you get a good view of the kids and the feel of the campus. Plus, we were a bit exhausted after our info sessions & tour.

If you are from Chester County PA – the Iron Hill Brewery on Main Street is owned by the same team as the one in WC.

Have fun!

Also take a walk over to West Campus - where Rodney and Dickinson are. A lot of freshmen live there and we never saw it till DD had to move in. There’s a tunnel to walk under the tracks - that’s part of daily life for the West Campus kids!

You can take the campus shuttle (or your car) down S. College Ave to the football stadium just to check it out. Other fields are there too (for example, for LAX) and where the basketball team plays. I know DD walked down there for games during the Fall but I would just take the campus shuttle if I were you.

If you walk the length of Main St and then down S. College Ave (plus the regular tour and the other suggestions here), you will get a great feel for the college.

Don’t know what your kid is into but I live about 5 minutes from main street and know all the restaurants. My favorites in order are:
- Homegrown Cafe (organic food – get the Pot of Gold fries with aioli!)
- Klondike Kates (really good bar type food especially French Onion Soup)
- Sinclair’s (for breakfast)
- Newark Deli and Bagel (for bagels naturally)
- Grotto (for pizza)
- California Tortilla (a chain)

There are some really cute shops on Main Street. I’m a big fan of Grassroots, Bloom, and the vintage store. It might be fun to grab a slice and walk the mall (the big green at the center of campus by Grotto Pizza at the end of main street). You should get a really good feel for the students that way. Newark is a really fun town imo.
