We will be in Newark for one day/night while touring several colleges. Any suggestions on places to eat/see/experience to help my son learn as much about UD as he can in that short period of time? Thanks so much!

Definitely take a tour of the campus. Driving around did not do it for D. After actually walking inside the campus (as opposedto driving around the perimeter) she was sold. Definitely check out Trabant, Perkins, whatever buildings house department S might be interested in.

Do not leave Newark without going to Main Street. Awesome pizza at Peace a Pizza. D’s favorite casual Italian restaurant is Cucina Di Napoli. I love Home Grown. There is an adorable cupcake shop on main street and the cupcakes are delicious. I have also heard that the Pita Pit is excellent (although we have never eaten there). Have fun. Its a great school in a great little town.

Also at many of the Main St places, students work. We’ve chatted with wait-staff, and other students not involved with the tour, and asked them about their school experience, etc. I have to tell you that, every student we spoke to had nothing but good things to say. The seniors said they dreaded graduating because they loved it there so much (we heard this from several). It’s very reassuring to hear this from current students. I think this kind of information is more valuable then anything on a tour, website or brochure.

Walk through the greens, where there are academic buildings - absolutely beautiful. Also, if he is into sports, drive down to where the athletic fields/stadium is.

Everyone on campus seems really friendly so talk to as many students as you can.

RE: Awesome pizza at Peace a Pizza. Really? I haven’t gotten to have any yet because everything we are on Main St, D insists on Cosi. Last time I asked her if I will ever get to try any other restaurant on Main St, like Peace a Pizza? We had a good laugh!

Peace a Pizza is awesome. They will make whatever you want, use really fresh ingredients and D loves when we come down and go there for pizza. S always orders their breadsticks and we usually get a pie half cheese and half chicken parm - well done. Its delicious and the owners (? the young guys there - not sure if they are the owners) will do anything to accomodate you. Haven’t tried Cosi yet…

just one other suggestion, look at priceline room thread. Going down this weekend have rooms at courtyard marriott (by the mall) for 45.00/night. Although if you are only there for one night you might just want to stay closer to campus like at the embassy suites, homewood suites or marriot courtyard on campus

Margherittas(sp?) is definitely the best pizza in Newark.
Grotto Pizza is a native Delawarean kind of thing.
Home Grown is one of my favorite restaurants.
Cafe Gelato is good if you are looking for something fancier.
Bloom and Grassroots are fun places to shop.
Cosi is a chain and imo it isn’t that good.
Cafe Napoli is okay.
If you want THE BEST Chinese food EVER go to The Bamboo House in College Square and order the Shrimp Lettuce Wraps. Those things are just the best.
Newark Deli and Bagel has really good bagels if you are looking for breakfast. I also like Brewed Awakenings.
Deer Park is a fun bar.

Just want to back up the Priceline info. We got the Hilton Country Estates for $45 for the night. About ten min from campus (with no traffic). It’s in a corporate area, so just don’t try to leave the hotel when everyone is leaving work.

I know Cosi is a chain; started in NY; but D still loves it (first time we tried it was when at UDel). Going to Peace a Pizza next time, no matter what she says!

We have a Peace a Pizza very near us and like it a lot (same with Cosi). It’s not equal to NYC pizza, but then nothing is, except New Haven’s. :)

Booklady: Is that Pepe’s Pizza in New Haven? I had a college friend from that area who took me there when I went to visit!

(now that we’ve turned this into a pizza thread!)

LINYMOM - We had several great stays at that Hilton in fact they upgraded us to a patio room which opened to the interior courtyard and the pool. Check out restaurant.com. They have $25.00 coupons that you can use for the restaurants. They are normally $10.00 for a $25.00 coupon but I usually dont pay more than 2 or 3 dollars for them (register your email and you will be notified when the yare 70% and 80% off, which is most of the time). We were there in August when we dropped off the kids at school and met up with other UD families. They allowed each family to use a $25.00 coupon which made it very reasonable. They have two restaurants in that hilton and they have a coupon for each of them

LINYMOM, yes indeed. The best pizza on the planet, as far as I’m concerned!

We stayed at the Hilton over Easter for $39 and used the restaurant.com coupons. We’ve stayed so many times over the 4 years, they recognize us. Sometimes we get free breakfasts by showing our Hiltons Honors card.
Restaurant.com is having a 70% off deal now - the code word is FEAST.

I’d say walk down Main St., walk along the green to get an idea of the campus, check out the library, visit what ever college your son would be attending (e.g. Purnell Hall for business - you can find this on the website, also info in the Visitors Center), Trabant (food court), drive by student housing (Harrington/Dickinson area, Independence Complex), also check out Perkins.

As for places to eat, Newark Deli & Bagel for breakfast; Margheritas (pizza), Kates, and Homegrown are all good lunch/dinner choices.

Wow…thanks for all the great suggestions. Wish we could stay longer! We are staying at the Embassy Suites on points but the Priceline info is filed away in my head in case my son decides UD is for him! Now, how to eat at so many places?!? Thanks again!!
