I am a little confused by when my D needs to take a subject test. She is interested in applying to some selective colleges that require at least two subject tests. When should she take the test for said subject? She really won't be allowed to do any AP classes until junior yr.
For example, she will be on pre-cal next year as a sophomore. Should she take Math I or II after the course? She's taken Honors Bio this year and will be doing Honors Chem next year. Her plan is to take AP Bio as a senior and take the AP test. Thanks for any clarification.

In both cases, a person will still have to study on their own. However, it will usually be easier after the AP class. For the Math II subject test, only Precalculus is necessary.

She should definitely take math II this year while the material is still fresh in her mind. It only goes up to precal. As for bio, senior year will probably be too late to submit the score to colleges. What APs will she be taking junior year? I’d suggest APPUSH and then take the US subject test at the end of junior year. She could also try lit because that doesn’t necessarily require an AP since it’s mostly just reading.

Thanks for the responses. She will be in Pre-Cal next year as a sophomore. So she should take the SAT II at the end of sophomore year? Senior year will most likely be AP English IV,
AP Stats, AP Biology, AP Music Theory and electives (dual credit college). Junior year will include AP English III, AP Calculus, PreAP Physics, APUSH, AP Macro an AP Govt.

As other posters have said, Math II should definitely be taken straight after precalc in either June or May. For most of the other tests, I would take them following their respective AP class. Thus, it would be advisable to take subject tests over things she has learned.

Math2 is probably the only subject test you can still do fine the year after classes. You don’t forget your math skill easily. You can miss some questions and still get 800. I can take the test 30 years after graduated from high school and still do great. So I would not worry about it that much. I cannot say that for any other subjects though. You should take other subject tests the year you take the AP classes. Nevertheless, it would be much cheaper to take 2-3 subject test together. So one may wait till junior year and take it with other subjects together. (That’s how my DD is doing that). Nevertheless, you may take this year and retake it next year too. Most important, check if you have the subject you need testing by junior year. If you want to take a biology subject test for pre-med track application and not taking AP Biology till senior, your probably should try it right after honor biology.

I would personally advise taking the Math II SAT after BC Calculus. When you take Math II right after Precalc, the topics seem hard and challenging. After you’ve gone through a BC Calculus course, the Math II exam seems like the biggest joke in town, even if you may have forgotten a thing here or there.

Thanks. I don’t think that her school offers BC Calculus on a regular basis if at all. I heard that they were trying to get enough students to make a class this year buy unsure if it happened.

For subjects like Literature and Physics, you should probably wait until after the AP course.

For Math2, you only need to know up to Pre-Calc. So your D may take it at the end of sophomore. However, she could wait till junior and take it together with other subjects she will be taking AP classes at that time. That would be the most cost efficient way.

For most subjects, taking the AP course first isn’t really needed. I took all my SAT IIs after taking the honors classes only.

After honors.

She should take math 2 in June 2014 and us history in may or June of 2015.
Or she could consider taking chem in June 2014 if she is not strong in us history. You don’t take sat2s at the end of senior year. By then you are saying bye to HS and are already accepted to college!

I’m taking pre Cal right now and just took the math 2 on Saturday. It was quite easy and I only studied the week before looking at 2 content review from review books ( Princeton and kaplan) and did 5 practice tests (2 from pr 2 from Kaplan 1 official sat big sat subject test book) I got scores ranging from 710-800 and the real test was a bit easier than the practice ones I took generally

You should tell your D to take math2 instead of math1. Math2 is much easier to get a higher score because the scale is much more lenient, it’s something like math2 you can get 6 wrong and still get 800 while math1 getting 1 wrong is not 800

For other subjects though I would personally recommend that your D take ap classes for as it will much better prepare her and she would have to be studying for the ap exams too so killing 2 birds with 1 stone (assuming your D will take july/may which is most popular dates for subject tests)

Math2 is the exception because it most primarily based on trig/pre Cal material along with geometry and algebra so ap calc wouldn’t help that much

To clarify my previos post, should take math 2 after pre calc in June, us history after APUSH in may or June (class finishes in may), or chem after honors chem in June.
