advice on my career aspirations and what path to take?

im a senior in high school and am applying to colleges. I have good grades and I'm best in math and science, yet also good at social studies. I'm from illinois so I'm applying to places like Northwestern and university of chicago in state, as well as schools like those out of state.

I'm been mulling over career paths and I'm not sure what to think since I dont necessarily have a passion for a particular career path at this point. I dont want a job strictly or the money, but having a solid chance to make really good money is important because even if I loved being a high school teacher I wouldnt become one.

I dont have the biggest passion for healthcare yet i do have interest in being a doctor. That path requires med school and resiency however, and the high salaries will have to pay med school debt, malpractice insurance. However, the job is very stable so if you make it your almost guarenteed that very good salary.

Then other majors im thinking of are an enginnering undergrad or a business undergrad (finance, economics). I've heard that engineering degrees don't really lead to a lucrative salary, and although I would want to get into investment banking on this path, not a high percent of people make it as high paying players in that field so its not something i can bank on.

out of these three majors/fields, how should i be thinking? engineer? finance? doctor?

No one can answer this. Only you can decide on your career path. You can not allow those who don’t know you to tell you what career you follow. Be open to the possibility of any career. You have to be the one to look into the opportunities and decide what fits you the best.

I think you should be taking classes in what interests you the most. In your freshman year, take some gen ed/elective classes that suit your interests. If you’re passionate about it, even better. I’ve realized that taking a career path you’re not necessarily “passionate” about (or even like maybe) is very stressful even if you think the topic is easy. You have to decide for yourself what you can and can’t endure career-wise. Think about it, you may be possibly doing this for the rest of your life. Your most important thought should be whether or not you enjoy the subject and if you could do it on a day-to-day basis. Money is important, yes, but you’ll be pretty miserable if that is all you focus on.
