The more AP/dual enrollment credit, the better the chance one has for that double major with engineering. One of my son’s suite mates is a chemE major, but will probably add a political science major, too. Another of his friends had big AP numbers and should have enough to double major in history. So it is doable.

He’s looking at either physics or business. If his ap/ib tests go well (and other than spanish he feels good about them, but it’s still a wait and see) he’ll have:

English 6 units
Hist. 6 (has)
Econ 3
Physics 8
Math 4 (has) poss. 8
Span. 4

^^^

I can tell you’re from Calif (without looking at your screen name. ). I was saying “units” for a long time after I moved here. :)

Since your son has Physics credits, that might help - I think he still has to take 8 credits of Physics with Calc for his eng major.

And, of course, if he ends up with 8 Calc credits that will help.

Many kids start out with a double major because they come in with a lot of lower division credits. However, fitting in those required upper division credits (usually at least 30) can be a problem. So, many end up changing their minds later and just getting the minor which only usually requires 6 - 9 upper division credits and the rest can be lower division.

History is often an easy minor to do because kids often come in with 12-18 history AP credits. Take 3 upper division classes and you’ve got a minor.

Courses Hours
HY 101 or HY 105 (or HY 110*) 3
HY 102 or HY 106 3
HY electives 300 or 400 level 9
HY electives 6
Total 21

Socal bama…

If your son doesn’t pass Spanish, then have him take the CLEP exam. Some swear that it’s much easier.

LOL - I guess I didn’t realize my use of “units” would point me out as a “foreigner”. Now that you mentioned it, I notice everyone else’s use of the term “credits”. I wonder if it’s strictly us CAnians.

I recall reading a comment about the CLEP before and we’ll have to put that as a possible, although we wish the spanish conversation class counted towards FL designation, since that’s what he needs most practice with.

You do have a good point about too heavy of a load later on with upper division courses in two majors. I wonder if he’d be interested in history minor, he’s always liked that subject and it does get him into classes and topics not strictly science/math related, a little variety could be good to have.
