Advisors

My D is deciding between AU and a small LAC up north. My concern is that she will get lost in the shuffle at AU. My experience with FA office has already been disappointing and rude to say the least. Can someone tell me about their experiences with advisors are they there for you from the beginning? How often do you meet with them? How available are the teachers etc…

I agree that AU’s bureaucracy is not one of its strong points.

Freshmen are assigned advisors based on their major or undeclared status in their respective schools. Freshmen fill out a sheet that gives their advisor background information, so that advisors can create class schedules for all incoming freshmen. Freshmen meet with their advisor during orientation. Advisors have drop in hours during the first two weeks each semester and students can make an appointment any time to meet during the semester. Freshmen must meet with their advisor in order to prepare to register for second semester classes. (From second semester on, students create their own schedules).

For the record, I’ve had good luck with advising.

I have had some amazing professors! I’ve become quite close to a few of them. It’s really neat to have professors who are teaching about subjects they do for a living. For the most part, professors have bent over backwards to meet with me.
