Hi! I just took my GRE a few days ago and I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth it to retake. I got a 170V/161Q (No AW score yet).

I'm applying for a Master's in Aerospace engineering. I have:

3.5 GPA from Purdue (Boiler Up!)

a year of undergraduate research

Two relevant internships

I've taken 4 engineering grad courses

Good statement of purpose (reviewed by several profs)

I know the quantitative score is a little low, but is it low enough to merit retaking? I'm not aiming for MIT or Stanford, something more on the caliber of Purdue, USC, or Texas A&M.

I didn’t prepare at all for the GRE, so I know that I could do better if I studied for the quant. I have time since my first deadline isn’t until sometime in August (for a fellowship). I’m just trying to figure out if it is worth the test fee and effort.

Nothing I’ve read online seems to agree. Some sites say that 750+ (~160?) is good enough, while other sites are saying that anything less than 165 is horrific for an engineering major.

For a Masters, it should be OK but realize that the quantitative score was radically rescaled going from the old scoring to the new one so a 750 might be the same percentile but it looks a lot closer to the highest possible score than the new system. If you have some time, and you are uneasy about the score, it can’t hurt to take it again. You can simply report the one you want to the schools where you are applying.
