Aerospace Engineering School

I would like to major in aerospace engineering in college. I have been looking at different schools such as Penn State-University Park, University of Maryland-University Park, Michigan State-Ann Arbor, Purdue, and Rochester Institute of Technology. I have been looking specifically at Penn State and UMich because both have very good aerospace programs, but I am not sure which one would be better to attend. In either school, I would also be applying for the honors program. I have visited Penn State as I live in PA, but I have not had the chance to visit any of the others yet. US News ranks Umich as the better program, but I read a few articles that said Penn State is ranked highest by recruiters when hiring engineers. If I could get a few opinions and suggestions that’d be great! Thanks

Consider RPI.

“Michigan State-Ann Arbor”

Dude, that could get you killed in Ann Arbor…or East Lansing!

I think you meant to say University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Yes that’s what I mean XD

Unless your family is very rich, going to an out-of-state public university is usually not a good value over your own, especially PSU. UMich is also very difficult to get into and very expensive.

Some private schools could have merit scholarships or do a good job meeting FA, but I am not sure any one realy stands out for Aerospace.

If you are not a shoe-in for PSU, you should try to put together a good affordable list. Top program is optional, any ABET accrediated school will give you a good education. Also consider schools with only MechE, but with some professors doing research or the like. Very similar degrees, and ME jobs are much less cyclical than AeroE.

Aero firms hire as many or more Mech Es as Aero grads. Don’t just fixate on Aero. Most Mech E programs have an Aero concentration. You should be looking for ABET accredited programs.

PickOne1, Michigan has improved noticeably in the domain of FA for OOS students. To many lower and middle income families, Michigan is now becoming a reasonably affordable option. The University still has a ways to go, but it is getting there.
