Hi Bill (and congrats to #1 son!)

This site ROTC - United States of America Service Academy Forums has a ton of discussions about ROTC scholarships. Good luck to son #2!

Here's what we discovered last year when our daughter received a USAF Type I ROTC scholarship. Her ALO indicated only the top 5% awarded a Type I full scholarship. I can neither validate nor repudiate the numbers, this is simply what I was told. Our ALO also counseled that the USAF would choose which of the three colleges applicants placed on their application the student would be permitted to attend. I found out, after talking with AFROTC folks at Maxwell AFB this not to be true. Evidently, the Type I is essentially a "voucher" that can be shopped around to any college that has an AFROTC program (you cannot take it to another service ROTC program for a potential cross-commissioning, I asked). This also became obvious after her awarding because a number of fine institutions contacted her directly in an attempt to essentially 'recruit' a Type I awardee. If you son or daughte is lucky enough to receive a Type I, also consider that some colleges will pick up the tab for room & board if you attend (e.g., Tulane and University of Portland). Most don't so you have to ask. (That was written by cadetkelly Dad, not the mom who usually writes about hair...)

All AFROTC scholarships are a voucher type, it doesn' matter which Type award you have...they will submit to the college you select.

I agree with cadetkelly after our DS received his scholarship, several universities personally contacted him and tried to recruit him...it was comical b/c their deadlines for admission had passed and they flat out stated we'll get you in if you want to come. This was not from the det commande, but the dean of admissions.

Most scholarships are given to technical/engineering degrees. Don't put down a tech/eng major for the purpose of getting the scholarship and then think you can switch it bhind their back. If you change majors from tech/eng to LA you will have to go through the entire process again.

Also remember that the AFROTC scholarship program has limited money, so when they run out of it, then it is all gone. Don't immediately think that you weren't good enough and doubt yourself, you are now coming up to their last boards and money is spreading a little thinner. We had a friend who as a sr in hs he didn't receive one, he applied incredibly early his fresh yr (paperwork was done and submitted by Oct) and he got one for the next 3 yrs. Obviously at the early of a date they were going off of his recs from hs.

Sorry I can't help on the questions, b/c DS never did the traditional interview...his ALO handled both AFA and ROTC, so my guess would be to expect the same questions your DS had from his BGO

I forgot to say earlier there is a great forum that has a ROTC thread where you can post the same question at United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin

You might get a larger response....they have a subtitle thread ROTC

so basically you are saying if you recieved an interview u got the scholarship?
