I hope it’s ok to discuss this here…it’s kind of related.

Do you think a student who was selected for Summer Seminar and receives a Congressional nomination is a shoo-in for getting an AFROTC scholarship?

I heard once that ROTC scholarships aren’t really that hard that to get, and I wondered if that’s true. The only thing that really isn’t in my ds’s favor is that he is not pursuing a technical degree. He wants to major in International Studies.

And another question about AFROTC scholarships. Ds has a lot of dual-credit college hours. He has been taking dual credit courses since he was a freshman in high school. (He is homeschooled.) If he gets an AFROTC scholarship, would he be allowed to work on a Bachelor’s and a Master’s concurrently, if he can finish both in 4 years?

It's difficult to make assumptions about the two programs. I know USAFA appointees that were turned down for 4-year scholarships and visa versa. ROTC scholarships are generally influenced by the major of choice--and those given 4-yr scholarships are almost ALWAYS for tech majors (including weather/meteorology). The AF is, in general, reducing the number of 4-yr scholarships anyway, preferring to evaluate students who go to ROTC detachments and then giving them scholarships after a year or two if they're worth the money. Good performers are routinely put on scholarship after 2, 3, or 4 semesters.

Yes, as I understand it, if you can do you BS and MS in 4 years, they'll generally allow that--and may pay. If they choose not to pay, you can get an education delay for a year or so that'll allow you to finish an advanced degree before coming on active duty.

PS - I don't mind answering AFROTC questions here, but this is the USAFA board. If we get too far off track, I'll edit...

I have a question that's been nagging me lately...How many pilot commisions are give to those in ROTC? I've always believed it's significantly less than USAFA...but that was an assumption. I've been reading some stuff that infers there might be an equal number?? If anyone can help me flush out my ignorance..it'd be appreciated.

USAFA gets 50% of ALL pilot training slots each year (~1100 total per year right now go to UPT from all sources. The rest are split between AFROTC and OTS. AFROTC gets the lion's share (over 90%) of those remaining. 20% of all new 2Lts are Academy grads (~925 per year). These days at least 70% are AFROTC and OTS is less than 10%. You do the math to determine where your chances are better... Virtually ALL physically qualified USAFA grads who want pilot trng get it.
