AF summer seminar

Yeah, I also took aero physiology and saw the cadaver! Which session were you in, and what flight and so on...?

Did you talk to other SS participants that maybe decided AFA wasn't the place for them afterall?

Yes, this one person in my flight, actually at the SS decided that the AFA wasn't for him, and I actually know of both scenarios... where the SS re-enforced a person's desire to attend the academy, and where the ss convinced a person that the AFA wasn't for him

falconflyer22 - I was A2, 1st session

Hey! I was in A2 ALSO! ....second session though, lol.

second session rawked. Go B11!

haha, actually we were like the reject element... :P

Did you have ben kushing!? He was awesome! I talk to him online once in a while, he got his piloet slot so he's happy.

Pilot.... Pilot.... wow I don't know how to spell

NO WAY!!! Oh my gosh, thank you so much for letting me know that!! You don't know how glad that made me feel! Yeah, I had kush! He rocked. He was awesome, our flight had so much fun with him. We actually got the HOnor flight of the session! It was great! Man, that is so inspiring to hear that he got his slot. Wow, thanks a lot for passing that on.

wow small world

I just applied to it today. Wish me luck!

Good luck. From what I gathered at SS last summer (session 1) there was an interesting combo of hard core types(that is a good think in my opinion), dumb people who just make fools of themselves, and people who just wanted to see what the place is like and are very apathetic towards the whole academy idea.

Going to SS was a good part of the app process, but they sugar coat it a lot. It was more like "summer camp" than anything else. I went to Navy's Candidate Visit Weekend and I think that if you get invited to that, or USAFA's equivilant, you should not pass up this opportunity. You get to see the everyday life of a plebe/doolie...something that is missing from SS. ..

AFA's Summer seminar is HEAVILY sugar coated, when I was at USMA's summer seminar, although it was ten times easier than what cadets go through, at least we did PT every morning, walked in formation etc, I felt like i was a cadet there

but

at the AFA's summer seminar, they only held PT every other day, and it was optional. Also, we had alot of down time. A lot of sitting in my room and twiddling my thumbs time, while at WP they had us constently moving around doing something.

However it's a good experience, you get to talk to the cadets who will give you a no-nonsense answer to any of your questions

^thanks for the info...

my brother is currently a cadet at AFA and he said that they gave a "ridiculous" amount of free stuff... is this true? i found it quite funny

Well, they get a lot of stuff...t-shirts, hat, duffel bag, leather binder, etc....but keep in mind that you do pay something like $300 to go, so I'm not sure I'd really call it free.

By the way, my ds didn't think there was anything difficult about SS at all. He saw it more as a recruiting week. He said there were other attendees there who were saying things like, "Gosh, this is really fun. I thought the USAFA would be hard, but it doesn't seem like it will be. Maybe I'll come here after all!"

LOL!!! Maybe the USAFA has done too good a job at being "kinder and gentler" during SS.

Oh, and about element leaders...my ds had one last summer who basically was awol. He was just never there. Another element leader felt sorry for them and took up the slack. This guy was great and also promised to write recommendations for each of the student's in ds's element, since their own element leader didn't even know their names.

Yes Ilovetocamp, it's true, you get TONS of stuff, even though you have to pay 300, that's nothing. They take you on tours, feed you, you take classes, reception dinner. the 300 is an amazing deal

if my memory serves me correctly..... 4 t-shirts.... shorts, sweat pants, sweat shirt, water bottle, hat, leather binder... water bottle, this stupid wallet necklace thing.... pens.... Plus you get to go to the C-store where everything is insanly cheap (e.g. Air force t-shirts, souvineres)

and I believe every element leader writes a recommendation letter to the people who attend the SS. So going to the summer sem can help your admissions status b/c you have an extra recommendation letter in your file, but mess up, and there's ganna be a little blemish on your file so if you go there, behaive

YAYAYAY! Just got my acceptance thingie today in the email.

LoL! I promise to be good when I go there! Thanks for the tip tbby2 heh heh.

Congrats on the acceptance, I'm sure you'll have a blast. I defintly recommend the rocketry class, I didn't take it but the people who did said it was amazing, you build rockets and fire them on the parade field. some of the other favorites is flight simulation. aerospace physiology ( I took it, very interesting, not sure if they'll do the cadaver thing this year)... but chose which ever classes you're interested. You have a chance to learn from some of the best professors in the country (a good number of them being AFA grads themselves)

My ds thought the best class was one on International relations where they did this simulation. It was like a game where you got to be a certain country and you were given so much natural resources, so many nuclear weapons, etc. You had to try to improve your country's situation by wise use of what you had, trade, etc.

One interesting thing he learned was that as soon as one person used nukes, everyone used them, and it was all over. Profound, huh?

Anyway, he said that class was a blast! (no pun intended)

hey--I went to the summer seminar last year, too. lol I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more physically challenging, but I found a way to swim/run everyday anyway. It was fun...you get to hike up mtns, etc--lots of sightseeing--CO is gorgeous. I also met a lot of awesome ppl.

so anyone who wants to see what it is like should go. to be perfectly honest, I do not want to go to an academy...maybe will do ROTC..but that's it. but the seminar was fun.

which session did you go to? haha maybe I met you somewhere along the way.

I went to the first session, flight B1
