AFA Interview

I applied for SS on Saturday, and now I’ve already been contacted for an interview on Sunday!!
any advice?? I wasn’t expecting to get an interview so soon!!

Just be relaxed, confident, and sincere. Just like when the time comes for interviews by your ALO and MOC, they are wanting to see that you are sincere and earnest about your desire to go to the Air Force Academy. A lot of people don't do an interview per se for the summer seminar. Yet, some do. Chances are, the interviewer is your ALO. So not only do you want to make a good first impression with him/her, but that will give an impression to them about you when they interview you for the academy application after june. Also realize that the academy can only accept about 300 +/- people for each of the 2 summer sessions. So even if you do well in the interview, it's not a guarantee of attending the seminar. Also, while attending the seminar will look good on your application and in the eyes of your ALO, not being selected won't mean that you can't get selected for the academy. Remember, when all is said and done, less than half of those who actually get appointments to the academy were selected to go to the summer seminar. So just relax and be sincere about your interests on going to the academy.

thanks for the advise, any more?

Simple question but be prepared to answer "why do you want to attend the Air Force Academy." They can approach this from several angles trying to assess the basis of your motivation and interest. Be familiar with the USAFA website, and the honor code, and be prepared to discuss how you have been a leader either in school, sports, or your community.

I know I say this a lot, but I think one of the most important things to convey in your interview is enthusiasm about coming to the Air Force Academy. If you are genuine and excited about coming here, don't be afraid to let that come across to your ALO. The most successful people that I see here are the ones who try to avoid being cynical and appreciate the opportunities they have as cadets. I would encourage you just to show that you have the right attitude, that you want to come to learn leadership and discipline at the best school in the country. Eye contact, a good hand shake, confindence (but not cockiness)... that's pretty much the ticket. :) Good luck! Oh, and advice on what to wear... nice slacks and a collared shirt. Tie if you want. Just make sure you look professional. You would think that would be obvious, but you'd be surprised! haha

man I ask so many nooby questions, but what does SS stand for?

summer seminar... week-long event for the summer before your senior year to sorta get a taste of the air force academy and life there

I applied for SS and rcvd a phone call from a LT Col about 5 days later we talked via the phone for about an hour...does everyone have a formal face to face interview for SS?

No, phone interviews are common for SS. Mine was with a Lt Col too (two years ago, yikes!).

Wow, that was a long time ago, wasn't it? Amazing what USAFA does to your sense of time...one minute you feel like you've been here forever, the next minute you have flashbacks of things like SS. It's kind of a good feeling though. :)

WOW...i applied to the summer seminar too and I also had my interview with a LT Col and he told me he was my ALO and stuff...and they had my information wrong when he told me my academic stuff so I faxed my scores to the AFA. Would that slow my application do SS down. My phone interview last aprox 30 mins and it went pretty good in my opinion an we have talked after the interview too... i wish i get in so badly...and does anyone know when they notify us.. THanks

I heard that they were notifying this year's SS first week in April, but that may not bet correct. My interview was also over the phone (and it went pretty badly seeing as my mom did not know who it was and woke me up from my nap to hand me the phone, resulting in a very groggy first few minutes) I still got in though, so he must have seen through that :)

Last spring my D (daughter) kept stalking the mailman in hopes of an invitiation to SS (summer seminar).... but to her surprise, it came via Email! So watch your inbox. She received an Email sometime in March (sorry I don't remember exactly when) and then got the official letter in April.

Good luck to those waiting to hear!!

For those that may not get accepted, PLEASE keep in mind that SS cannot accommodate everyone. There are many highly qualified candidates that do not get "in", that ultimately end up with an Appointment. I know of one awesome AFA grad that still jokes that she did not get into SS. It didn't stop her from applying, getting an appointment, graduating, and then flying the #3 slot for the Air Force Thunderbirds! I don't think she'd mind that I'm revealing her SS saga. She's all about inspiring kids to follow their dreams.

Also, for those interested in the story of this particular Academy grad turned Thunderbird, you'll be interested to know that this weekend she's being inducted into the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame. She's also speaking at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum on March 27th.

So for anyone that REALLY wants a USAFA appointment and you find that you're not invited to SS, keep this inspirational grad in mind! SS is a great experience but it's not do or die :).

flymom is so right. I applied to Summer Seminar and didn't get in but recieved an LOA this past November and my appointment in January. So just because you don't get accepted to summer seminar doesn't mean that you won't get an appointment. If you don't make it, just keep your head up and and make it that one thing that drives you even furthur to pursue your appointment. Good Luck Class of 2013!
