Affording IU

I have been accepted to IU and I really want to attend. The only problem is, It costs a ton (OOS). How generous is financial aid because I want to be a Hooiser so bad!!

Not the greatest. My S received the $9,000 automatic scholarship and $1,000 Honors scholarship. He completed the Selective Scholarship App but because of his intended major it only helped with the Honors money. As you know that still leaves approx. $31,000. It’s pretty disappointing because my S loved IU but he is being offered a lot more at other OOS schools.

Everyone gets a $5,500 stafford loan per semester. Otherwise they don’t give much since they invest so heavily in the automatic scholarships.

Unfortunately OSS students can’t expect much in terms of aid :frowning: I’m OOS and I would be lying to you if I told you I wasn’t taking out some loans to pay for my education. I would look at the schools that give you the best financial aid packages and go from there. And who knows, IU can be equal/cheaper than your state school with scholarships. For example, with the 9,000 auto scholarship, an IU education is very close to the cost of a UC education (given if both students live on campus).

Scokithom, what is your cost of attendance based on? Is it projected to be 41k next year for OOS?

It is not that high now (or at least, wasn’t for my D–w/the dorm/meal plan/books/expenses etc it was more like 35k minus her scholarships, which made it quite affordable for us).

On the Jacobs School of Music Web site, the estimated cost of attendance for 2010-11 is $40,264. I actually didn’t realize there was a difference but did see on IU’s main page the estimated cost is between $35,000-$37,000 depending type of housing arrangement. There are a couple of additional fees for the music school. My S is still waiting to hear about the possibility of music scholarships.

thanks for clarifying–that makes sense. Hope the money works out…IU/Jacobs is pretty incredible/renowned!
