Affording multiple Boarding School application fees...

Hi everyone:

As I am applying to boarding school next year, I have noticed very expensive application fees. I don’t want to sound cheap, but I am planning on applying to over 6+ schools and each application is over $50+.

Any tips?

You can call the school for a fee waiver and that will cover the application fee.

Fee waivers are for low income applicants.

Sure, fees can add up but they are a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of tuition.

If you are a student, look at ways to earn some $ to offset fees - odd jobs, pet sitting, babysitting are all ways my kids earned money in their early teens.

@chipotlegirl123 Thanks for the tip.

@doschicos Right, thanks.

Just ask for a fee waiver. Most schools are great about that. If they won’t waive your fee they will reduce the fee

If you plan on going to any fall open houses, some schools waive the fee if you attend.

@NYCMomof3 ok.

@vwlizard Ok!!

Note that I’m pretty sure fee waivers are contingent on being able to prove that the application fees are a true hardship and not just an inconvenience.

We applied for ten fee waivers for my twin goddaughters this past admission’s season. We told the schools that they would be applying for full financial aid. 7 out of the ten schools defrayed most of the application cost (mother had to pay $10-$15 per child depending on the school) and three schools picked up 100% of the cost. It’s sort-of a catch 22 since the child (children) who need the most aid typically have to apply to the most schools, pumping up the cost of the applications. The mother could never have afforded the full cost of 20 applications to ten schools.

@ThacherParent Really? Thank you for the advice.

@SevenDad Ok - thank you!
