Africa vs. Ancient Empires Course?

<p>Hi everyone. I am in the process of signing up for senior year courses, and would like your input. I have room for two more courses in a single semester... deciding between: </p>

<p>HISTORY: States and Empires of South America:
This course examines the history of the high civilizations of Middle and South America. The course begins with the study of the origins of pre-Hispanic state level economic, political and religious systems. This serves as a background for under- standing the culture of the Aztec and Incan Empires. Students will then examine the European conquest and colonization of these civilizations and the nature of the Spanish Empire which followed. The course will end with the Creole movements for independence from Spain in the early 19th century in Latin America.</p>

<p>HISTORY: Africa in the 20th Century:
To provide the context for an understanding of contemporary African affairs, this course examines the history of the conti- nent since Europe’s “scramble for Africa” in the late 19th cen- tury. Topics include the European colonial period, decolonial- ism, the struggle for independence, African nationalism, and the development of independent African nations. Two coun- tries will be studied in depth: Kenya and South Africa.</p>

<p>ECONOMICS: Macroeconomic Issues in the U.S.:
This course examines in depth the behavior of macroeconomic aggregates such as GDP and its components, inflation, unem- ployment, and interest rates. We study the determinants of long-run economic growth as well as the causes of the business cycle (recessions and booms). We discuss the pros and cons of fiscal and monetary policies and also address government bud- get deficits, the role of the banking system, trade and capital flows across countries, and exchange rate determination.</p>

<p>ART HISTORY Fundamental Roots:
This course provides a global view to the study of art from before the written word to the Gothic style. Works from the canon of art will be studied, as well as artists and cultures often missing from survey courses. Students will be introduced to various forms of art (architecture, painting, sculpture, and more), and to important movements and periods of art, all within the context of their times. Images, discussions, readings, writing assignments, and a museum visit will provide a thor- ough exposure to the periods and styles explored.</p>

<p>Take economics, you can use that class in your everyday life. If you can choose two try Art History, very interesting class but only is you like art. But is it possible to take any of those classes as AP in your school or no?</p>

<p>Maybe go for the course that you haven’t really explored yet. It’ll make you look more well-rounded. Just my guess. If not, I’d say go for the one that you’re most interested in.</p>

<p>By the way, I’m very jealous that your high school offers those kind of courses. Be lucky. :)</p>
