How many of you believe that there should be an AP African History? I mean we have AP World, AP American, AP European....

If you go into a history major in college, many colleges start with African History so it might be a good start. If not, it might just be cool to learn more stuff about Africa's history.

AP East and AP South Asian are also missing. I think it would be a good idea to have courses that complete the spectrum of regions present in AP.

I don't think they would get much business off those APs because most schools have requirements for WHICH social studies classes you take as well as how many you take.

For example my school requires 1 semester of poli sci (AP Amer. Government fulfills it), a year of world history, a year of US history, and a semester of econ. So you really only have one year left for a social study (AP Euro)unless you double up which can be really tough with all the memorization needed in histories.

i think they should offer AP Political Philosophy separate of AP Gov

they should also expand the AP Math courses..........AP Linear Algebra??? perhaps

AP Linear Algebra would be a good course following AP Calculus AB, and it could be covered senior year if one learned trigonometry in grade 10.

i also agree with AP African History..my school offers African History as a history elective..collegeboard should offer an exam for it

other possible APs:

AP Instrumental Music (like a studio art type deal where u send in ur performance tape)
AP Astronomy
AP Geologic Time
AP Evolutionary Biology (darwinism, etc.)
AP Sociology
AP Political Philosophy
AP Philosophy
AP Ancient Greek
AP Greek Mythology
AP World Literature
AP Sporting History (like Olympics, etc.)

the list could go on and on

psh, of course APs are geared toward western whites

AP Chinese is coming out next year....w00t!

Great.
So native Chinese are going to go out, ace the tests, and kill its value. Seriously, they should ban native speakers from taking these exams-what's the point? To show you are superior to people who have been taking the language for 3 years?

ok that isnt necessary.....not all native speakers pass the exam...us english speakers who take AP english are not guaranteed to pass the AP english exams so speakign the language natively has nothing to do with passing an exam

haha thats a great point oboesmrtyguy!

my point was, there are english speakers who get less than 3's on the AP exams....get over it

that has to be the worst idea ever. You see, the collegeboard designs the AP English exam under the impression that you have taken english since you were little. The AP Chinese exam will be designed for whites who have maybe taken 3-4 years of chinese.

Btw, it doesn't matter, because I'm sure that the moment a adcom sees a chinese name and AP Chinese, he's probably not very impressed. Its like taking the TOEFL as a native here in the US.

what do you mean designed for whites? how can an AP of a foreign langauge be designed towards whites....that doesnt make sense

Oboesmrtguy:

AP Foreign Language exams aren't "designed for whites", they are designed for people learning that language in school as a SECOND LANGUAGE. They are testing whether you KNOW the foreign language, but since it is geared towards people who have only 4ish years of the language completed by the time they take the exam, it is a very easy test for a native speaker. One of my friends from Spain who took the AP Spanish exam told me she thought it was around 4th or 5th grade level. This is why many people think it's unfair that native speakers should be allowed to take the exam.

The AP English exam is designed for NATIVE speakers of English. It isn't testing whether you know English. It's testing your ability to write well in an analytical format/analyze literature. That's why some native English speakers fail the exam. If the AP Foreign Languge exams were formatted in the same way as the AP English exam, the only people who would pass would be completely fluent in that language AND have great literature skills. :P

and your point meant nothing because that isnt relevant to what i was saying

Um, actually, I was trying to answer your question:

"what do you mean designed for whites? how can an AP of a foreign langauge be designed towards whites....that doesnt make sense"

And this question also:

"my point was, there are english speakers who get less than 3's on the AP exams....get over it"

Excuse me for my rash comment. I did not mean to be racist in saying whites, rather using the generalization that very few caucasians speak chinese as a mother tongue.

BounceChrissy gave a very good argument, and it is probably the most relative statement to your topic in the entire thread.
