African American with a 3.5... any chance at UPenn or NYU?

Taking the SAT this Saturday, so I don't have any scores as of yet.

What are my chances? I'm looking to major in business, so if there's any top-tier business schools besides these that you think I can get into, list them if you can... reach/match/safety.

Thanks!

We need to know more than your race and GPA to chance you. (See other chance threads to find out typical information.)

Hm.
Well I’m about to start an organization for lung cancer patients who don’t have health insurance (inspired by my aunt who passed away in February), I’ve been a volunteer for a Church youth group for 4 years, I have 110 hours of community service, I’m a member of National Honors Society at my high school, I’ve tutored other kids in Spanish II during our free periods this whole year, I’m in CSF & on the honor roll.

Not sure if it matters, but I’m a professional actor and have been in the industry since I was 1 year old.

By next year I’ll have taken four honors math classes and one AP math class (5 years)

I’m out of state though (from California), but I’m not sure if that works to your advantage for private schools or not.

Only bad thing is my 3.5 is weighted…I’m hoping to get a 2000 by the time I finish all 3 of my SATs and, hopefully, a 28 or more on the ACT.

(and I hope that being an underrepresented minority works to my advantage…UPenn is 8% African American & NYU is 4% African American)

I have the same question.

Once while I was browsing mychances[.]net I saw this one Af-American girl with a 3.4uw get into UPenn.

It is unlikely (although still possible) you will be accepted to those schools. It is even more unlikely you will be accepted to Penn’s and NYU’s business schools with a 3.5 weighted, unless you are coming from a very prestigious prep school, or get a 2200+/33+ on SAT/ACT.

Penn, like most schools, will give an edge to URMs, but not nearly as much of one at it’s Wharton business program. So I’d say the low GPA alone would make it nearly impossible and a small possibility with a 750 plus math SAT score. NYU Stern is more of a possibility but again would need a strong math score to know you could make it through the program.

What’s your unweighted GPA?

How famous are you as an actor? That could be a factor.

& I’ve taken two classes at a local community college (Santa Monica) and gotten A’s in both of them… I plan on taking two more this summer.

And umm…famous enough to where kids I haven’t seen before @ my school (along with people who happen to walk past me in the mall & other places) come up & ask, “Hey! Weren’t you the kid in…?” or “Dude. I saw you in…”
Majority of the stuff I do is commercials… & I’m on the Coke box along with a national State Farm commercial right now (believe it or not). I’ve starred in Mad TV, Gilmore Girls, The Parkers, an IBM commercial with Joe Pitka, an SBC commercial with Damon Wayans, numerous print ads in magazines & billboards (should I show colleges my resume when I go in for the interviews?), a short movie by a USC alumni called Love Letter… the list goes on. I’ve had a professional agent since I was 5 months old.

Unweighted is a 3.3. What schools are more realistic? (any with top 50 business programs?)

How about my chances at U of Virginia/U of Michigan/U of Texas/UC Berkeley/U of North Carolina/Boston College/USC (#1 choice)/Northeastern/Georgetown?

You thought about the University of Richmond?

Nah… I’m mainly looking for a college that combines prestige (business school-wise) with sports (more specifically, football and basketball). I know this excludes NYU, but the fact that it’s in New York and close to Wall Street makes up for its lack of sports.

Good luck with that then. USC would probably be your best bet.

Yeah, make sure you apply to USC. GPA is not good enough for UPenn, even if you’re African American. You may have a chance at NYU depending on your SAT scores.

Where should I apply for Early Decision/Action? Does applying Early Decision for UPenn make a difference?

i dont think applying ED to penn will help you because the pool is uber competitive at that point…you get ALL the top kids who are really serious about UPenn and have fantastic stats applying. plus, UPenn is binding, which means that everyone applying is hardcore intense about going there, have really good scores, etc etc
i would check out some of the UC schools…Berkeley, UCLA, and obviously USC have good programs and are easy on instate tuition…GL!
p.s. chance me back if you have time? :stuck_out_tongue: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/704436-chance-junior-sil-vous-plait-p.html</a></p>

Do you have an extracurricular life?

I think you should apply to UPenn and NYU. Really, NYU should not be that hard. I think the acting thing should definitely work in your favor. People are amazingly starstruck. They might also assume that it would give you a more grown-up perspective on business.
