i am CAUCASION!!

and i had a mid to upper 1400 SAT score, was #4 out of 250 kids in an ubbber competitive private school. ALL HONORS and APS, do i sound a lil bitter, yes i am b/c Penn was my #1 choice.

Collegekid:

Sigh.

Wow, you are so ignorant that it blinds you from seeing how inane and pathetic your argument is. I did not want to turn this into another racial war, but having a nice SAT score is just one facet of the admissions process. For instance, I happened to have a very good essay. In fact, I met my AO at Duke and she said it was one of the best that she read out of 1000. Likewise, you are dehumanizing the whole selection process into absolutes. There really is no such thing as qualified here. I know a WHITE girl with a 1230 who is at Yale right now. Granted she is top of her class and has every EC in the book, but her stats did not live up to Yale's demanding expections in the traditional sense. Why was she accepted? Well, because schools see character, a quality you are obviously in need of. Moreoever, are you not going to Cornell? Well, stanmaster is going to Stanford, I am going to Duke, and almost everyone else here is going to Penn. So, I don't think you necessarily have the right to suggest that ANYONE is inferior. :)

Cheers.

statistically the race that does the poorest on SATs is African Americans, followed by hispanics. So naturally when comparing they take this into account thus African American get greater leeway.

amnesia vives en miami ahorita? Yo tambien soy de mexico, pero de guadalajara. Tambien estudie la prepa aqui en los EEUU. Hay un chingo de mexicanos aqui en penn.

Devil i never said anyone was inferior, i was just answering a question posted by someone asking if i was a URM, and I said I wasn't, and in fact, I was a lil bitter (not some more) that I did not make it to Penn. There is a student, that will remain nameless from my school had a low average, 1280 sat score, not involved in anything, applied and got accepted to Penn and guess what, his race: hispanic, gee, I wonder why he got in. The only other schools he got accepted to were UCLA and Berk.

man oh man.

Collegekid, stanmaster got into like 17 ELITE schools, he must have had something beyond the color of his skin to aid him. Now, I know you don't mean to be malignant, but you must understand that your comments are quite biting to me. It's almost as if all of my accomplishments have been nullified and all that remains is the check mark I made on the application for black.

Edit:

What are you trying to say? Is Penn better than Duke because they rejected you and Duke did not. My friend, I know people who got into Princeton and not Penn. lol Penn was particularly unforgiving with admissions this year.

Everyone here will be uber-successful in life it's not the college you attend it is what you do with it

Oh of course. I wish all of you guys good luck. Penn is awesome...no doubt about that. I just wish they would have a new mascot. COme on...Quaker? lol jk

Devil, I did not demean your efforts at all, and I have seen your stats posted before, and you had a reallly high GPA, indicating you were very sucessfull and worked hard to achieve what you got. Good luck to you. However, there are some ppl that get into these schools for the wrong reasons, and you know well what I am talking about. I am sorry, in my AP English class, my saluditorian who worked her tail off 97 average, 2 in the class, 1550 SAT score, applied ed to columbia, got accepted, and this kid i am talking about did not work hard at all, he is pretty smart, but did not take school that seriously, and still landed columbia. I think thats an incredible injustice to the system and to high school kids out there.

I understand where you are coming from.
Yeah, crazy crap like that occurs at my school too
I wish you good luck at Cornell. Try not to study TOO hard though, k? lol

i dont think i have ever heard of that happening. all the kids i know who got in were only lacking in the board scores area of their application. My best friend and many people i know were rejected from these top schools with scores higher than mine so i doubt the lazy student you are talking about are admitted at any rate higher than a lazy white student. Yes college apps can sometimes be misleading enough to make a bad student look good but that can be said for any race.

dude, this kid has a 88 average, mid sized courseload, not at the top, the only thing he had going for him, this was the only thing, being part of the fire company, he was a volunteer.

bern700: amnesia vives en miami ahorita? Claro.

Uh....Donde esta zapaterias?

I don't know how to do the upside down question mark so forgive me. lol

To get back to your original question about AfAm life at Penn:

Consider this:

While only 7% of Penn is African American, Penn is a very large school. Thus, roughly 700 of Penn's undergrad population is African American. Many of the African Americans coming to Penn are coming from schools where they weren't in the minority...and may have gone to schools where there were only a handful of African Americans anyway. So, being amongst 700 other African Americans CAN feel better than what you might experience in a smaller college with only, say, 3000 students and 7% African American (210 African Americans total).

It's also interesting to note that a good deal of Penn's African American students choose to live in African American housing. You'll hear mixed opinions on this sort of arrangement and why students might choose this route. Again, people need to really consider that in order for many of the AfAms to get into Penn, they had to have rigorous academic training - i.e. private prep schools - mostly white.....or good public schools - mostly white. This might be their first opportunity to attend school with so many other blacks. Hence, they take full advatage of the cultural "plunge" and accept segregated housing - which isn't so segregated now that it's open to other students, as well.

When you're considering the racial make-up of a college, always consider it in context. 7% at Yale isn't the same as 7% at Penn. Penn also has a very active black greek presence.

I don't know how to do the upside down question mark so forgive me. lol

LOL..It's alt 4520 ¿¿¿¿

Well put...plus philly offers a vibrant city full of activities that might appeal to African-American students and probably a large African-American young urban professional population as well...

you all have to remember these are private schools. it's like a private company admitting people who they want.

it's not injustice. if you don't like, apply to a public university where they don't use AA.

Nu-uh, UCLA uses AA

You make upside down question mark with alt 168¿ foo

don't worry about the question marks. speak english! it's easier without all those crappy marks.

anyway, to the point: Ivy Leagues are all private companies that are accredited by the federal government to ensure you degree is "certified" - think about it, it's like you owning a special club where you can pick and choose. Ivies right now want minorities, and quite frankly it's hard to find qualified ones becase we represent such a small number of people that are applying.

i don't listen to the nay sayers because the facts are with me.

i've seen all the ivies have about 4% hispanic and < 1% native american and 11% african american
