I've read that the overall acceptance rates to Wharton is somewhere around 10%. I'm interested in knowing what you think the admission rate for just black applicants is. I would also like to know how black students at Wharton performed on their SATs, high school GPA, and other admissions criteria. Thanks!

No one has this information. The only information available to you are the two or three posts on CC which is hardly a representative sample. I would say that there is generally a 2100 minimum on the SAT with most scoring in the 2200s, a few in the 2300s. (Not sure how relevant this is, I went from mid 2100s to low 2300s, kinda makes me think the SAT is not indicative of anything). Most have high GPAs and we obviously cannot tell how good their essays are etc, but they were probably just as good as everyone elses. I know a few kids here that founded business etc, so it is basically what you would expect from most other candidates with perhaps a few more getting in with slightly lower SAT scores than the rest, but again, that’s not neccasarily true.

This should really not concern you though and it will not help you. Do as well as you can, get as good grades as you can and write the best essay you can, perhaps then you will get in. Forget about everyone else and don’t think that AA will save you, i know many blacks with 2300s and 2200s that got rejected. It is about the whole package.

Be good at math! I asked a regional admissions officer what one of the most important aspects was for admissions, and it wasn’t that you started a business or had a banking internship - it’s that you’re strong in higher mathematics such as calculus and statistics. I’m sure Wharton is also looking for certain personalities, so that’s where the teacher recommendations and essays come in. Most of the people I know at Wharton are outgoing and communicative, though they do know quite a few introverts that attend there. There are so many fields within business that regardless of your character you’re bound to find one that fits you.

I guess the above doesn’t pertain specifically to black students… but I was kind of on a roll so here’s just some advice haha.

It is hard to get into Wharton. Black applicants with 2200+ or 2300+ can get rejected. You will however have an easier time getting in than white or asian applicants with the same stats.

I don’t believe there are any specific statistics regarding this though.

^There’s absolutely no way a black applicant with a 2300 SAT would be rejected from Wharton. You’re dreaming.

^ nobody gets into Wharton without good grades in high school. or at least a transcript that proves they can handle the work. now statistically there are only a handful of black kids with 2300’s in the country(the 99th percentile mark for black students is under 2000), and I’m sure some years Wharton gets no applications from black applicants with 2300+. the assertion that “many blacks with 2300’s got rejected” is hyperbole. but hypothetically such applicants would still be rejected without a solid secondary school record.

are there any current Wharton students who know the scores of some of their black classmates?

“There’s absolutely no way a black applicant with a 2300 SAT would be rejected from Wharton. You’re dreaming.”

If I believed this, I wouldn’t have allowed my D (one of those “rare” 2300+ black applicants) to apply to 14 schools. She should be in everywhere, right? Nope. Don’t believe it. Also agree with Woodrow that no one without a strong transcript has a chance.

The top colleges are very interested in keeping their 4-year graduation rates high and their drop-out rates low.
