African Kid trying to go to HYP. What are my chances? and be honest

I am an African kid who came to america as an immigrant. My parents are very poor and i am the first generation to go to college. English is my second language but i picked it up on an early stage. My academics are pretty good but not stellar.I have made 5 B's my entire high-school year and they have all been either 91 and 92s. I will finish Highschool with 11 Ap courses. My GPA is 4.78 weighted and 3.78 unweighted. My rank is 42/633 of students. My public highschool is highly competitive. I have done internships (34 hrs) at hospitals and also volunteering but not too much like about 70 hrs. As for my extracurricular activities I am President of Environmental Club and Founder/President of a English honor society (ironically). My SAT II are 720 Bio M and 710 U.S history
My ACT is broken up
First time) Math 31, English 23, Reading 29, Science 25
second time) Math 27(I dont know why), English 26, Reading 32, and science 28
I am taking it again on October 25, trying to get a 31+
I am teacher at my church and a deacon as well.
Am involved in multiple honor society and got top ten finalist At Hosa States

I really want to go to Harvard and I am really stressed out, Please be honest with me do you think i have a chance??

Are you an international student, or a permanent resident?

And why do you want to go to Harvard? If it’s because of the financial aid, there are also other schools who meet full need and are need blind:
Yale
Princeton
Pomona college(only for those who had US high school education for four years, which you seem like you have had)
Dartmouth College
Amherst College
MIT

Also there are a number of school who meet full need for int kids but are NEED AWARE. And there are also some schools that give automatic scholarship for OOS.

Could you give us more information? What did you get in AP scores? What were your couseloads? Any other extenuating circumstances?

I came to america when i was 6 pretty sure im a citizen

I like harvard but if i can get into yale or princeton then i would definitely go. As for financial aid It has little to do with applying but if i can get in then it does for choosing, finance wise: $25000, family of four, taxi driver father unemployed mother, EFC is zero.
AP score:
Psychology:5
US history:4
Biology:3
Environmental science:4
Human Geography:4
Senior course load: ALL AP:Physics 1, Chemistry, calc AB, calc BC, Statistics, Literature

Circumstances/hook: URM, low income, essay about my life in Africa and how it shaped me today

grading scale for my highschool is
standard:4
honors:5
AP;6

Your AP’s are good, your GPA is good, your extra curricular’s are ok and ACT is not so good. I would say you have a shot but you have to understand they get thousands of students with this kind of resume or better so I would definitely have a backup in mind. Good luck though!

I agree. With Ivies, have a backup and a backup for your backup. It’s not that you are not a great and deserving student, it’s just that there are tens of thousands of great students applying to these same schools and they can’t have you all. In addition to HYP I would look at the full need schools mentioned above and maybe throw in a few cheaper schools that will give you aid based on your great GPA and SAT scores (assuming you took regular SAT and not just subject tests).

Are you applying through QuestBridge?
In any case, apply to Pomona and Amherst. They’re Ivy-Level schools (just smaller, but outcomes are very very good, with a very powerful network).
With any school with an admission rate of 20% or less, you have to consider it’s a crapshoot. You’re as qualified as can be, but so will (literally) thousands of other applicants. Your hooks really help as do your academic stats (even ACT is within range for a first-gen kid).
Have you been on any fly-ins?
Also include “Little Ivies” and NESCAC schools, plus Carleton, Haverford, and Davidson (full finnancial need met, including transportation and books, WITHOUT any loan!)
What’s in-state for you?

I am in North Carolina and Davidson is close by. I am applying through Questbridge!! Also I am taking another ACT this october I know i need to bring my ACT up it is troublesome :(

Go visit Davidson - register ahead of time, fill out the form carefully, and if there’s space to ask a question, ask one in relation to your academic area of interest.
Good luck on the ACT :)
