ROTC vs. Admission

Hi all,

I recently received a letter from the United States Navy saying that I had received a full scholarship for, and acceptance into, the Navy ROTC program at The University of Virginia. I made sure to include this fact on my UVA Common App Supplement.

Just wondering if this weighs at all on my acceptance/denial. My grades are respectable but not on the level of the average UVA student, but did apply on time with all forms filled out.

Any help is appreciated

Well as far as I know the admissions process is need-blind, so I'm not sure if the scholarship (as in just the knowledge that you have the money) would actually make a difference, but if it was like....a selective process to get in, then that might count for something?
But of course that's just speculation on my part, good luck either way!

My OSO told me that admissions was another story. A ROTC award did not ensure placement at the schools I applied to.

That said, I'm sure UVA has a target they would like to meet.

Best of luck.

Chris: Was UVA your #1 choice? If not what was and what was UVA?

I actually had UC Berkeley as my number 1 (hippie at heart) but UVA was my number two.

I received the scholarship from, i believe, the 3rd selection board, due to having a third tier major choice (Poly Sci)

Thats great that you got your #2 which I might add is pretty darn good. I think the admission folks will take it into great consideration your Naval scholarship since it gurantees that you will attend UVA. Anyway, would love to hear if and when you get accepted. It is for this year correct?

There is no question that the Professors of Military Science have direct access to the admissions process at even the top tier universities. Just my opinion, but I think they should. A 4-year scholarship award from the Army, Navy or Air Force is a pretty strong indication of motivated student with a greater than average probability of succeeding academically. Not to mention the fact that the tuition check is guaranteed by Uncle Sam.

VTnewdad: I couldn’t agree with you more. That has been my experience
