I have had my TAG approved for UC Davis and plan to transfer this coming fall. I will have IGETC done and all my major pre reqs done. Looking at the website for my major it appears as though I need to take about 10 upper div classes to complete the major. But we need 180 quarter units to graduate. Are the remaining classes simply additional electives to reach the 180 units? Can they be lower division or must they all be upper division? I have started looking at course offerings and there are some in other subjects, both upper and lower div that look interesting. I am assuming that in my 6 quarters I will have to take more than the 10 classes for my major and just want to know which classes I should be looking at. Might there be a chance that I could finish a quarter early? Would be great to save some money. Thanks!

Here is my understanding…You have to complete the 10 classes for your major…so that will prob. be around 40-45 quarter units…then there is a graduation requirement where you need to complete “X” amount of upper div classes. Fulfill that req and the rest of the classes can be “whatever” classes or you can do a minor major.

It depends. There are UC requirements, campus requirements, and specific college requirements.

Most UC requirements are done in lower div.

At Berkeley, we have an American Cultures requirement, as well as American Institutions. 120 units to graduate with a 130 cap (136 for double majors)

My College is Letters and Sciences. L&S has a few requirements, like taking minimum 6 units outside of your major.

Berkeley is on the semester system. So in my 4 semesters here, I generally have to take 2 Major Requirements per semester, and 2 Electives. (13 units is full time here. Most students take 13-15 per semester).

They explain this stuff over and over again at orientation. Also at UC you get a major advisor. It is much more personal than the overworked CC counselors. If you look in the UC Davis catalog online, you can surely find the info you’re looking for if you poke around enough.

You use your remaining units to take the following:

Any breadth requirements not satisfied by your community college course work or IGETC. E.g. Berkeley L&S requires 6 upper division units outside of your major department, and Berkeley engineering requires two upper division humanities and social studies courses.

Free electives, which can be in or out of your major. Basically, take any courses that look interesting to you. You may want to prefer courses not available at community colleges (e.g. upper division courses), since you can always take courses at community colleges later if you get interested in them.

Early graduation is a possibility if you meet all unit and subject requirements early.
