Agribusiness or Agricultural Economics vs. Business at Texas A&M

I have been wanting to attend A&M for a long time as a transfer student and wanted to get into mays in the fall. After I was told that my classes wouldn’t transfer yet since they were still in progress, I had to look at other options. Instead of waiting a year for Mays at A&M with no classes left to take, I can take one semester off in the fall and get into the agribusiness or ag econ program in the spring. I originally wanted to study finance, and now I’m not sure that an “agribusiness” degree can get me a job in finance such as investment banking or sales, instead of a job relating more to agriculture. Anyone with real experience or professional advice would be helpful! Thanks

If you want to get a job in investment banking and non-agriculture finance, don’t study agribusiness. That’s just the way it is. There may be some overlap, but you will mainly be wasting your time.

You can’t get into IB from A&M as it’s not even a semi target.
Agribusiness can lead to a job in sales and is a major with 100% professional placement.

What would you study instead? Just general finance? Thanks for your input

And if A&M isn’t considered a target or semi-target for investment banks, which schools would be? Thanks

What are your grades and scores?

I’ll have a 3.7 gpa when I transfer to a university. The 2 other schools I have on my list are SMU and UT Dallas. And getting into either of their business schools would be no problem compared to tamu.

Neither is a target though.
Look at Cornell AEM, Williams, Hamilton, NYU Stern.
Those are all very difficult to get into but a 3.7 GPA is good and hopefully you have strong EC’s showing your interest for math, economics, and entrepreneurship/innovation + hours volunteering/a job.

There’s a lot of energy related finance work in Texas. It’s not the same as investment banking in NYC or Chicago, but the cost of living is a lot lower.

^very good advice. Energy-related finance is a growing field and universities in Texas have a good reputation in that area. TAMU is tops in the field and UT also ranks high.
