Aid Package $10,000 less than expected

Is anyone else having this problem? My aid package is about $8000 less than I expected based on the college cost calculator. What should I do?

If neither you nor your parents can see what the discrepancy is, you could just call the financial aid office. Politely explain that the award is significantly less than the Net Price Calculator indicated, and ask if they could go over it with you to make sure there has been no mistake.

Yeah so was mine…
The NPC was telling my parents that we would pay around 11 grand a year (which is still way too much), and they’re making EFC just under 16,000. Literally what the hell.

Not to mention that they don’t ask for bank statements or anything. I don’t know where they think we have that money, we have like 100 dollars in our savings account and maybe 50 in our checking.

As someone who ended up in the same situation last year, except in August (since financial aid was delayed last year), I’m sorry to inform you that this isn’t unusual. (My initial estimate was $20,000 off the calculator, thought we managed to get it down some). The aid calculator works well for some people, but for other students, particularly ED students, we get screwed over. You should certainly call the financial aid office and talk to them. They’re very kind people, and they will try to work with you to get the number down, but be prepared to still be paying significantly more than the calculator estimated, because that is a possibility. Make sure to let them know when you call that the numbers you’ve been given DO NOT meet your demonstrated need, and that they impair your ability to pay for school. You’ve signed a commitment to attend Wellesley, yes, but they’ve also told you that they will meet your demonstrated need. Sorry that this happened.
