AIM What do you need to get in?

My S is a sophmore and is thinking about applying for AIM next year. What are they looking for to be accepted?
He is an Eagle Scout, OA Chapter Chief, will probably be Lodge Chief next year( this is a very top position that is usually held by an adult), he volunteers up in the local mountains on their search and rescue team, is a beach lifeguard( also very hard to attain, it is very rigorous and competitive), he has his Emergency Response certificate, is getting his Wilderness First Responder and Rescue Scuba this summer. He also volunteers every week at the hospitals med/surg floor and has overall over 1000 volunteer hours. He is an avid mountaineer and rock climber. As far as team sports go he swims for his schools team but has not made Varsity yet.
10th grade PSAT 2200. GPA 3.4 at a top 50 private college prep school.

Do you think that they will overlook his not so hot team sports participation and focus on his leadership?

There are many similarities between the things they look for with AIM admission and regular USCGA admission. However, there is no Physical Fitness Evaluation (PFE) nor DODMERB (Dept of Defense Medical Examination Review Board) required for AIM.

They are looking for well-rounded candidates, those who have demonstrated leadership and/or taken advantage or leadership opportunities, excellent test scores (PSAT or SAT.ACT if taken), transcripts, class rank, and extra-curricular activities such as Scouting, employment, and volunteering. Participation is sports plays a part as well, as all USCGA Cadets are athletes, many participating in Varsit (inter-collegiate) sports (about 70%) and all others in intramural (inter-company) sports.

Good Luck, the application should be out in mid-February 2011 for his AIM sessions in July 2011.

Thanks Luigi59!
My S does not really gravitate to team sports but he is VERY athletic and fit. For example he is doing a 65 mile backpacking trip this summer and also working with a trail crew. He summits very high peaks at least once a month. He would probably like a lot of the intramural sports. He would be fit enough to play any sport, but he really doesn’t like football, baseball, basketball kinds of sports.

AIM letters are being mailed today.

oh Thank you Luigi59! Now if we just had “instant snail mail”

One too many "4.0 eagle scout football caption class presidents applied! We got the “good canidate but” letter. How many Cadet for a day, sprout invites go out?
