yeah, but I thought that this year's AIME was about as hard as the 2004 AIME, where the cutoff was a 220 or so. Plus, they are expanding the number of qualifiers from 250 to 375

I thought the AIME this year was much easier than last's...

But the increasing qualifiers thing will definitely lower the index.

The AOPS people mostly seem convinced that the index will be very low this year. (or at least compared to last year's.) I personally disagree - I see it being a lot like last years.

lol tetrahedr0n I remember you barely missed the cutoff last year. What'd you get this year?

I got 233.5, so I think I'm going to miss it again by a couple points. But it's not as important this year though...

That was the cutoff last year, right? And people said the cutoff was insanely high, so I doubt that will happen again. What state are you from?

you're crazy. theres no way a 233.5 wont make USAMO. I've got a 226 and I'm pretty confident that I will make it.

It isn't that farfetched... last year I claimed there was no way the index would hit 230 and it did. Expansion or no expansion, I think this year's AIME was easier.

I'm from MI, and we have higher scores than mine, so I can't make it by the highest qual method.

what's the cutoff for MOSP?

I'm thinking the cutoff will be around 210-220. To me, it wasn't as easy as last year's, and there's also the expansion.

what's the cutoff for MOSP?

That's hard to say...

"Red" mop (freshman MOP) had a cutoff of 1 2 years ago and of 7 last year. It depends how hard the USAMO is, but expect it to be between 1 and 7.

"Blue" mop - the real mop group for everybody is usually much harder - like 17,18-28,29 depending on your grade (they have a bias towards younger kids, and to make it as a senior. you have to be in the top 12 on the USAMO.)

the USAMO cut-off will be a little lower this year (probably a point) because AMC got funding from Art of Problem Solving to increase the # of USAMO qualifiers from ~250 to ~350.

^i never knew that.
Cool!

I'm ****ed because my teacher knew I qualified but didn't do anything about it; she was too busy apparently.

^ I remember when I was in 7th grade and qualified for AIME, but we got a snow day on the day of the AIME A contest. My teacher said "too bad"...

haha, that's like my school this year...we received a bomb threat on the day of the AIME. i wasn't going to take the test anyway (not a math person), so I'm not clear on the details, but I think they're going to take the B test later this month.

danielsjang, wow you qualified in 7th grade? What was your USAMO index this year?

Maguo - contact the AIME people. You can still sign up to take the B exam. The AIME folks are very helpful and can work with you to make sure you can take the exam.

The school where my son was supposed to take the AMC cancelled the exam the morning of the exam (after we had driven a considerable distance to that school.) As it was the B exam there would be no second opportunity to take the exam. I immediately called the exam people. They asked who else might be available to give him the exam. After a few phone calls, I found his Scoutmaster at home. AMC e-mailed the test to the Scoutmaster and my son took the exam at the Scoutmaster's home later that evening.

zogoto:
oops my bad. I was invited as a 8th grade. 7th grade woulda been nice. I just remember scoring decently (125+ ish?) on the AMC that year. I forgot which AMC it was tho (8 or 10?).
As for the index, I didn't do so well afterwards. I was just good w/ AMCs, and not really w/ AIMEs (5 last year, and 5 this year, too, i believe)

Sorry, wanted to correct a mistake I made before. The alternate exam is tomorrow, the 22nd, not the 21st. At least, my teacher's packet says Wednesday the 22nd and that's when we're taking it; the site has the 21st listed for some reason...
