The majority of UVa’s first year dorms don’t have a/c. The newer dorms being built now obviously have a/c, however as assignment is done purely by lottery it’s luck of the draw. There are only a couple of weeks a year that it’s uncomfortable. Two box fans in the window (one facing in, one facing out) and smaller ones on your desk, and it’s not too bad. Much of your time is spent elsewhere. When S2 and his rm’s happily moved to upperclassman university apartments this year, so excited to finally have a/c, they literally complained about being too cold for weeks until the a/c shut off (master control). Both S2 & S3 have spent summers there in dorms without A/C…now that get’s uncomfortable, but you adjust with fans and lots of water. After a couple of nights adjusting neither had trouble sleeping.

We lived in a 100yo home in central western PA with no a/c for 5 years. No screens on the windows or locks on the upper windows come to think of it. It’s not Atlanta, but it did get pretty warm. You really do get used to it. It was odd to move back to a more southern state where we spend so much of the year sealed tightly in temperature controlled climates.
