I booked with GO for $55 as well. D’s has used this 3 times with good experiences. They didn’t ask for ID but a printed copy of the receipt was required,
I always advocate for Go shuttle. Did ct limo only once and hated it from their terrible website and booking to their more stops and arriving very late for pick up. Ct limo is just not worth it.
Unfortunately for BRadley airport, ct limo is the only option. So dd just always flies into JFK/LGA.
I agree - we had our D do CTLimo several times to/from Bradley. The last time they left her stranded at Bradley - they never showed to pick her up. For several hours they kept telling her that they were on their way, only 20 more minutes, etc. We finally had her take a taxi. Which was very expensive, as you can imagine, from Hartford. Now she just takes the Metro North and associated buses to/from La Guardia. They always run on time, and the travel worries have been far fewer. And it is cheaper.
It is too bad, since Hartford is only an hour away (if shuttle is running), and getting to LGA requires more effort. But reliability is so much better with Metro North and LGA that it doesn’t make sense to go back to Hartford.
How long does Go Shuttle typically take? My son tried it for the first time and it took 3 hours to get to Yale once he was on the shuttle.
It takes an hour and twenty minutes from LaGuardia to Yale by car, when there is no traffic. If the trip is around rush hour, three hours would not be shocking at all.
Might have been the tail end of rush hour, but I gather the length was due to many stops along the way. Just curious to know if that’s typical or not. Three hours in a van is making his usual public transit route look a lot more attractive to my kid, but it would be good to know from others who have taken the shuttle whether the trip is generally shorter.
Dd takes go shuttle. Takes 1.5 hrs in nonrush hr and we plan 2,5 hrs during rush hr. Go shuttle might make a few stops along the way, depending if others have booked a shuttle along the route. Dd said that ct limo made many more stops than go shuttle did.
We’ve also planned 2.5 hrs to go from yale to JFK during rush hr and my D would still sometimes arrive at JFK in only 1.5 hrs so would be sitting around at JFK very early.
Okay, good to know–thanks!
I’d appreciate thoughts on the best way to get from campus to JFK for Thanksgiving break. On the way in our daughter took Go shuttle from JFK to campus and it worked well.
I’m a little nervous though about a shuttle from campus to JFK, the day after the Harvard football game when a lot of students who come from places beyond driving distance will be heading out to the airport around the same time . . . just wondering how well the shuttles handle peak periods like this and would appreciate any experiences.
As noted earlier in the thread, it seems like the Metro North train into NYC and then a bus to JFK is another option. I assume this will take longer and seems less convenient than a door to door shuttle. On the other hand it seems like a potentially more reliable option?
If you do decide on a shuttle, reserve it as soon as you can. They can fill up on peak days.
Thanks Hunt.
To JFK, my son takes the Metro North to the Harlem-125th Street station, then the M60 to the airport.
It’s cheap, and has frequent service. If you charge your MetroCard before you board in New Haven, you don’t need to rush to buy a ticket on the bus. (Big, gigantic bus)
The M60 goes to LGA, not JFK. Additionally, the M60 is a Select Bus Service line; you buy your ticket from the machine before boarding the bus.
To get to JFK, one would need to take Metro-North to Grand Central, then the subway to the AirTrain.
There are also commercial bus services from Grand Central to the airports (i.e., http://www.nycairporter.com/Schedule/GrandCentraltoJFKAirport.aspx). We’ve used this in the past.
@skieurope … You’re 100% right! I’m sorry!
Thanks everyone, that’s very helpful.
Is the bus/train option still ok if there is luggage? D is usually light traveler but at Christmas she will be home for a month and may need to bring larger, checked bag. Is that going to be too unwieldy? I’m always afraid that having to handle a lot of luggage makes her more vulnerable. I would feel better if she had tried this all out before now but even though she has traveled from JFK and LGA, she has had people pick her up each time (I don’t get voluntarily driving from NH to the airports - ah youth).
FWIW, I’m a pretty light traveler and I always take public transportation on breaks, but then I’m also traveling with a 22" max. With 26"+ luggage, I look for other transportation options.
That said, going to LGA is not too bad as the M60 bus has luggage racks. Going to JFK with large luggage is much more cumbersome.
My daughter has explored a few options to/from JFK now and it appears that for her anyway, the best options are - Go shuttle from campus to JFK, and from JFK to campus a cab (flat rate) from JFK to Grand Central, then the Metro North train to New Haven.
The shuttle seems to work fine going from campus to JFK, but she’s had some very long trips going the other way with lots of stops. I think she said it was over 4 hours one time.
The one time she tried the NYC Airporter bus to GCT that involved a long wait for the bus, and the subway seems like it might be a challenge with luggage. So as best I can figure so far, a cab to GCT then the train from there is the most user friendly option.
