What is the best airport to use to get into SLO? I know SLO has an airport, but it’s very expensive to fly in there direct. We are looking for major airports that we can rent a car and drive to SLO. Any suggestions from out of staters would be appreciated!

LAX, SFO, Oakland, might try Santa Barbara (but that is generally pretty expensive too)—price is sometimes lower at Orange County (John Wayne), Ontario or Burbank). A little less convenient but you might want to consider it if the price is significantly lower. If you are fluying a major airline try to fly into and out of a “hub”.

San Jose airport is 3 hour drive, and a pretty easy drive
LAX is probably also 3 hours
Burbank might also be a possibility

San Francisco and Orange County would be further away

Our D flies in and out of SLO for boarding school on the east coast. It is a wonderful, secure, little airport. If at all possible I’d try to swing SLO. Santa Barbara is too far IMO and not cheap, and San Jose is way too far.

Thanks for your help. I’m glad to hear about the SLO airport - if my S was traveling ,I would certainly chose that option. We were thinking about coming for the open house in mid-April. Tickets into SLO are $400 vs $125 into major airports like San Jose or LAX. As much as I’d like my S to be able to go to the open house weekend, I’m not sure it’s worth $1500 were finding it’s going to cost for two of us.

I don’t know where you are flying from but SLO airport recently got a $500k grant and they’ve hired a consulting firm to help them expand service. They are looking at Denver, Sacramento and Seattle. I know this doesn’t help with your immediate travel plans but it may help in the future if they do actually expand.

That’s good news for us - we’re close to Denver. If my S picks Cal Poly, $400 for just one ticket doesn’t seem too steep; it’s just when it’s him and the rest of the family and then $500 for the hotel and the food…it’s just an expensive weekend. I’ll have to look and see if any threads discuss the Open House and whether it’s a high value for those who attended.
