Alabama vs Auburn National Merit scholarship

For those who are also considering Auburn, their scholarship now covers up to 18 credit hours a semester.

odd that auburn would make this change and not UA.

that is one of the things that has me a little worried about UA since my DD will be a paying student and not one on full scholarship. if she was on full scholarship, i think we could handle it if it came into play. but as a paying student … i don’t want any surprise bills!

well Auburn has gone up quite a bit…so they wouldn’t be good for you…at Auburn you now pay the same if you take 12 or 18 credit hours…

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bama raises theirs, too. Bama won’t want to lose potential students over this issue

If you want that to happen at Bama, I suggest that you email those who can make that happen. If Bama hears from enough prospective students/parents, they will act. Include some info about your child (stats, etc) so Bama will realize the potential negative impact to Bama if they don’t make a similar change.

Here’s what you can reference…

Under the modified plan adopted by Auburn trustees, students may take more than 12 credit hours at no additional cost during the fall and spring semesters…students will pay the same rate regardless of whether the student takes as few as 12 hours or as many as 18 hours.

I can definitely see UA making the change so that it is the same price for 12-18 credits a semester. Most other schools I know already have this policy and the 16 (was 17) credit limit is annoying. It’s probably something that should be taken up with UA trustees so that all students would benefit.

done! ! ! ! !

In looking at sample curricula for different engineering majors, many include 17 hours for the first semester. Since the NMF package covers 12 to 16 hours, I am assuming we will be charged for one hour overload fee at a nonresident fee, we are OOS. The next semester suggests 15 hours, so we’re within the limit.

Of course, the engineering scholarship covers this overage, so not complaining, but for other majors, it would probably be possible to take less than 16 hours a semester.

We are also doing Alabama Action, but I think this has also been covered, that they may add that on to your spring semester to cover the overage fee, but again, this is totally voluntary and will be covered by the engineering scholarship, although I’m sure many nonengineering majors attend Alabama Action and would be interested in how this overage is handled.

Looking at the big picture, if your NMF scholarship only covers four years, it would be worth paying for an extra credit or two to be able to finish in four years, rather than having to go a fifth year totally on your own dime. By that fifth year, the tuition will be a lot higher than when you started and you will be charged OOS tuition rates.

So far, we’ve avoided any overload fees because of AP credit and such. However, I still think it’s a good idea to contact the people in my earlier post to recommend that Bama do the same as Auburn in regards to credits.
