Auburn NMF Scholarship - not full tuition?

Hello,

My Son is a NMSF and we have been looking at several schools. Auburn wasn't really on our radar until we began to receive letters touting their NMF Scholarship. We are OOS and at first I thought that the competitive award to a NMF at Auburn was a full ride. Now, however it seems that the 15,000 per year does not cover the full tuition.

So, I have two questions - first, am I correct in concluding that the Auburn NMF scholarship doesn't cover full tuition. Secondly, is it possible that our son could receive other scholarships from Auburn to cover the difference?

Sorry if these are elementary questions but I am new to the board.

Thanks so much for the help.

jamdad,

Per Auburn’s web site, the OOS tuition and fees for '12 came to $23,290. Here’s the link:

http://www.auburn.edu/admissions/files/costofattendance.pdf

That figure will continue to increase while the $15K scholarship does not.

Have you looked at Alabama’s NMF package? It’s a good bit closer to a full ride than Auburn’s.

Alabama is supposed to cover tuition plus a lot more for NMF.

Yes, here’s the link:

[National Merit Finalist and National Achievement Finalist Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/nms.html)

There are additional scholarships for Engineering Majors as well.

Auburn had to reduce it’s NMF scholarship to $15k towards tuition which costs $23,290.

That gap of about $8300 will grow each year as tuition increases each year. It’s unlikely Auburn would give additional scholarships to make up that difference.

So you’d have to pay for that difference plus the meal plan, books, and any misc costs yourself.

Also, Auburn’s NMF scholarship does NOT cover the cost of its Honors Super Suites. You’d have to pay an upcharge for that if desired.

also, Auburn’s NMF scholarship is NO LONGER assured for OOS students.

Alabama’s NMF scholarship DOES cover full tuition. It also covers the entire cost of the Honors Super Suites…plus you get other goodies.

Bama’s NMF offer is NOT competitive. It is given to EVERY NMF student. Bama has more money than Auburn does.

And…if you’re an Engineering or Comp Sci major, you’ll get an additional 2500 per year.

Have you looked at Alabama? Bama has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex.

It is not too late to apply for Bama’s NMF scholarship…Bama gives leeway to NMF applicants. This fall, Bama had 182 frosh that were NMF. Bama has over 600 national scholars on campus.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. Well, that confirms what I thought about the Auburn offer - although I must admit that wasn’t clear in the letters we received.

And no, we had not considered Alabama but we definitely will now. Thanks again for all of your help!!

uab in alabama also has a full tuition and housing (and a stipend of 2500) for nmf. Different type of school than auburn or ua…urban campus, 11K undergrads, very strong for sciences or anything health related.
dorms are suite or full apartments
wonderful sci/tech honors program
[UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham](http://www.uab.edu)

UAB is a destination for academically talented students, and we love to reward your hard work. We recognize National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Finalists, and National Hispanic Scholars with the following scholarship, which is renewable for four years. The details:

Full tuition, required fees, and housing (up to 15 credit hours per semester) for a total of eight semesters (fall and spring)
A one-time $2,500 stipend to be used for experiential learning (Study Away, internships, co-ops, etc.)

I should add that the Alabama NMF scholarship covers up to 20 credits per semester. That’s a significant benefit especially for OOS students. Eng’g students often take 17 - 18+ credits per semester, so not having to pay an OOS charge for any additional credits can be a big savings. That alone can save a student $2k-4k+ per year.
