Alabama vs. Ohio State Geography

I'm having trouble deciding between the two schools. Ohio State has the higher ranked program, but I feel a little more comfortable at Alabama. I have full rides to both schools and I'm oos for both schools. Any ideas to which would be the better option?

My son looked at both schools for geography, he ended up choosing urban planning at our in state option.

OSU geography is world class, research is impressive.

Alabama geography is just average. You could get a similar geography degree at a hundred other schools in the US.

If you want to do regular GIS work, then either will work.

If you want to do GIS with an emphasis in spatial analysis, then OSU is the only choice.

What type,of geography are you interested in?

Full ride to Ohio over Alabama in this case.

I’ve only narrowed it down to GIS so far.

The Alabama GIS program is a basic GIS offering.

The OSU GIS program is more technical (requires computer programming courses) and requires more data analysis coursework. You will likely have more job options from the OSU program and a much more advanced skill set.

Academically, there really is no comparison between to the two programs. OSU is superior.

GIS skills are in demand now so you will have options from either school. If you go to Alabama, consider supplementing your geography major with a few computer science courses and extra stats courses.

Thanks for the information, I believe this just help make my final decision.
