Albany or Buffalo? Please Help!!!!

Accepted to both schools, and I cannot decided at all! Will be a freshman in Fall 2010. Looking to do something Pre-Law and I really need some advice here! Which has a better social life/atmosphere? Academics? Please try to be as specific as possible. I'm from Rockland County, NY.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming you mean UB, not Buff State, they have a good social scene, decent amount of on campus activities, good academics (especially if you take time to plan your courses/profs) and it’s easy to get to many off campus things to do either near South campus or public transport. Of course, there is great diversity there and that always makes for a more interesting atmosphere! There are a lot of very serious students who still seem to have a good time. They have good pre-professional advising and tons of extra workshops/speakers/volunteer ops for interested students. I’m sure Albany is also a good school, and there are plenty of colleges there, but Buffalo just seems to have more to offer in general (YMMV). I will say that UB has some of the happiest/most satisfied students and alums that I’ve met from any one school!

3+3 Law Program with Albany Law School

The University at Albany, State University of New York and the Albany Law School of Union University participate in a joint degree program combining the bachelor’s degree and law degree in a six year program.

Definitely visit both, if you haven’t already. This may very well turn out to be a “fit” decision for you more than anything other single factor.

My D is a happy soph at UB, and also takes summer classes at UAlbany (we live in the Capital District). I agree with sk8rmom’s description of UB, but UAlbany has many plusses as well – particularly its access to the NYS Capitol and a wide variety of internships in related fields. Buffalo is much bigger than Albany and has the highest concentration of international students of all the SUNYs, which lends a different vibe to the campus community. UB’s law school is well regarded, and I believe also offers a combined 6-year program. Both schools have a significant number of commuter students, but UB seems to have more of a sense of community. Albany used to hold the dubious crown of biggest party school; that has moderated some in recent years. Both have relatively convenient access to interesting, quirky neighborhoods. Albany has a great music scene, and there is a high concentration of college students in the region (seven colleges/universities in the Capital District). Both have two campuses and shuttle busses that connect the two. Basketball is big at Albany, football rules at Buffalo. Since you’re from Rockland County, one factor you should also consider is distance from home, if that’s an issue for you; it’s a hike to Buffalo, easier to go home on occasional weekends from Albany.

Contratulations on two good choices, and good luck!
