D2 is at a DI university playing a sport. The team has a strong party hard reputation and are in to the drinking parties even while in season. The coach has set a no alcohol rule for the 48 hours before a game, they can be suspended for the rule violation but he doesn't do anything about the underage consumption. I am surprised at this since D1 had a dry season rule at her school and if the coach caught an under age drinker they were suspended for a few games. I am curious as to what your athletes have encountered and standards set by their coaches.

At my daughter’s school (DI), the coaches only enforce the rule of no alcohol within 24 hours of a game or practice. They do not enforce laws; that is left to the police.

24 hrs before a practice or a game…that would be all the time because the one day off is always a travel day for D2.

The feeling I’ve gotten from talking to coaches (S is a HS senior) is that they just expect them not to drink 48 hours before a meet. One of them said flat out he knows the kids drink, and the others hinted that they knew, too.

The drinking S saw on his overnight trip really hit him hard. He has decided to write one of his college essays about underaged drinking. He’s already discovered that among licensed drivers, kids under 21 have TWICE the risk of dying in a car crash due to alcohol.
