hey all,

i am wondering how big alcohol is on campus? is it a significant part of the social scene?

also, how strict are the campus police?

Tufts University is a very religious school. There is no alcohol to be found on campus. TUPD patrols all residence dorms and Greek houses every night looking for possible offenders. If you are caught with alcohol, you will be expelled immediately.

During my tenure as a Tufts student, I was what Tufts pleasantly calls a "Healthy Liver." A teetotaler, if you'll indulge me in my affection of terms from the 1920s. Though I would not have subscribed to the Temperance movement - not my position to tell others how to live, after all.

Anyway...

It really wasn't a big deal. I had friends from many circles, with many different interests, who had social roots in a lot of places. My best friend at Tufts was in a sorority (Shout out to Nancy), who took me to AOPi's semi-formal event one year. I actually found myself surprised at how little I needed to explain that I wasn't drinking (it was a question I dealt with frequently in high school). It was easy to find events and social opportunities where drinking was not part of the objective for the night.

Now for a reality check: Tufts is a college. There is drinking on college campuses. It isn't hard to find.

But we are not the stereotypical "Party School." If you are looking for the stereotypical "Party School," you'll be disappointed with Tufts. Social opportunities are plentiful, and there's another thread on the social life at Tufts. The balance that Tufts strikes in social life gets discussed there. I invite you to check it out.

I would still call alcohol a significant part of the social scene, though you can get away with not partaking.

To agree with Dan and Sam, I'll use a word of Dan's: "Truth."

The whole school does not get blasted on weekends. A fair amount do. A fair amount find other crap to keep them entertained. Like Dan, I don't have to defend my position that I'm not drinking. However, I find it truly bizarre that he used the word "teetotaler" on the day that I had to do a reading for Philosophy of Language, which featured the example: "If, however, the man asking 'Who is the man holding the martini?' were president of the Teetotalers' Union, the context would be completely different." STOP BEING OMNISCIENT, DAN. IT GETS ANNOYING AFTER A WHILE.

TUPD are annoying about drinking, and great about everything else. Your questions make me think that you want to spend your four years of college intoxicated, though, which probably won't get you far at Tufts. Check out, I dunno, BC or something? LOL.

Tufts isn't a party school, though some people seem to wish it was. People drink, yes, but not as much as some other places.

what do you mean tufts is a religious school?

Yea tell that to the countless ****faced kids roaming the streets every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

djvu-- I think the poster was kidding.

Chapst1ck: yeah. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. At a real party school, there are ****faced kids roaming the streets 5 or 6 nights a week, and during the day too. Go to a football game or a frat party at a real party school like UT, UF, University of Georgia, UOklahoma, or LSU and then go to one at Tufts. You'll see a big difference.

everyone should just chill out...i was just asking a question

Blurinka-i dont know what your problem is but obviously your nose is way far in the air...maybe I should go to BC?

Yeah, this is why people who hang around this board are interested in Tufts, for the football. Does Tufts even have a football team? :D

yes, Tufts has a football team; it's just that we're a D-3 school.

I've been to a few football games, they're actually quite fun, if not as crazy as they'd be at other places.

lol i can tell you my nose isn't far in the air...i'm like less than 5 feet tall :)

anyway i'm not sure how suggesting BC to someone who is looking for a big drinking life on campus makes me stuck up. I had no idea if you were hoping for alcohol or hoping for a more sober campus. If it was the former, I thought you'd be happy at BC. S'all.
