another one!?

does any one know anything about it?

I know that it has to be completed by September 1st or you get an F for 5% of your grade in CH 301. Also you have until Nov. 1st to score above a 70% or you get an F for 3% of your grade for CH 301. 2% is just completing the test by Sept. 1st. Does anyone know how hard it is and what to study for it so one can pass it in the first try? I took high school chemistry a while back (06-07 school year) and have a hard time remembering stuff.

yea, the last time I took chemistry is when I was a freshman so I failed miserably. got like a 48% haha. It had some serious stuff like stoichiometry, avagadro’s number, molar mass, density… but after you take the test, it’ll take you through a tutorial through all the lessons. After a couple hours I got from 48% to 67%. But since I’m pretty much completely new to chemistry, it’ll take a little shorter for most others. I’m trying to get this done before school starts.

Oh man hopefully I can remember some of that stuff. Is it free to take it a 2nd or 3rd time? Like you can take it as many times as you want for free right?

you only take it once. after that, it looks at the topics you’ve missed and gives you a tutorial on each on with practice questions. after you do the practice questions and get 3 of them right in a row, then you’re score goes up bit by bit. it’s alright to fail the test (as i did) the only downside is that there’s more topics you’ll have to do practice questions on.

for example, after i took the test, i only got ~60/132 (45%). after I did the questions on one topic, it went up to 61/132. and you repeat until you reach 70% and finally 100%.

i just got this email too!
i took high school chemistry at my junior year and i don’t remember anything about it now. i think i’ll dig out my high school notes to review for some.
Is this test’s rules mostly same with ALESK math?

[ALEKS Chemistry Assessment](http://web3.cns.utexas.edu/aleks-chemistry/faqs.php#is-aleks-timed)

oh, and after like 30-40 tutorials, it gives you another practice test to see how much you learned. don’t take it lightly though cause it’ll change your overall score.

How hard is it like what are the major concepts tested? Henryj223 if you can give like an overview of the test that would be great like what to study for mainly because I want to get over 70% the first time so I don’t have to worry about anything after that. I want to get it done before school starts. They notified us too late about it because I just got the email today morning. They should have told us earlier so we can have some time to prepare.

from the top of my head…balancing chemical equations, molar mass, volumes (cm to liters), labeling single replacement/double replacement/combustion/decomposition/precipitation/acid-base reactions, d=m/v, V=n/c, calculate molarity using solute mass, isoelectronic atoms, periods and groups in the periodic table, dilutions, kelvin to celsius, writing empirical formulas given percentage of each element in a compound, using a dalton (g/mol) with grams with moles, and you’ll have to deal with significant digits.

Thanks. Man I hate significant digits. Is the answer completely wrong if you disregard or mess up on the significant digits? Also you can use the internet to look up stuff right like on the Math ALEKS?

yea, you can put up another window. and if you mess up on sig figs, it’ll warn you and let you change it, but it’ll only give you one warning per question.

Oh so it will tell you if you have the right answer but the incorrect amount of significant digits? like if the answer is 12.50 and u put 12.5 then it will tell u to look at significant digits or something or will it say to look at the whole problem again to see if the answer is right or not?

yea, if the numbers are right but the sig figs are wrong, then it’ll just tell you to check your sig figs.

is it like a pass fail thing?
the 5% is like A or F?

ok, I now think that while going through the tutorials and practice problems, you are periodically given a surprise test (not sure how often). You must get a 70+ on one of those periodical tests to get the 2%, not by merely completing the tutorials. you get the remaining 3% by completing the tutorials (getting 132/132).

but wait…

a quote from the email says that “This assessment will count for 5% of your CH 301 grade (3% for completing ALEKS by 9/01/09 and 2% for scoring a 70 or higher by 10/21/09).” another quote says that “Students who do not complete ALEKS-Chemistry prior to September 1 will receive an F for 5% of their grade.”

so by not completing the ALEKS by 9/01/09, you get an F for the whole 5%, even though the 70+ portion isn’t due yet. am I the only one confused here? I’m thinking that I’m mis-interpreting the meaning of “completing ALEKS”.

Completing means that you did it. You could get a 24%, but you still “did it”. You then have time to get the score up to passing.

oh ok thanks! haha I’m so glad that I was wrong.
