Hi! I am a junior considering making campus visits. I can't find very much information on the college sites, so I was wondering: Which school has a better engineering program? What about honors colleges? Also, how far away from each other are they - about five minutes? Thanks for your time!

Hello, Hagfish!
I’m a senior Material Science Engineering major at Alfred University, and I’m actually a tour guide so if you do decide to make the trip to Alfred you may be given a tour by me! But as far as your question goes…
Alfred U offers a wider variety of engineering disciplines: Mechanical, Glass, Ceramic, Materials and a Green Energy degree. I don’t know what exactly A State offers, but I believe that they have a Civil Engineering program, which we do not, but don’t quote me on that. I’d say if you want to be a technician go see A State, but if you want to be the engineer in charge, come to Alfred U. I think you get a better preparation for a wider range of jobs, but I am a biased source. Also, if you don’t know what sort of engineer you want to be you’ve got more options for a major switch (and it’s pretty easy) and AU is like one of the only colleges that offers Glass and Ceramics.
The schools are across the street from each other, so it is about a 5 minute walk. The town is mostly sandwiched in the middle.
As far as Honors goes: I am not an honors student, but what I believe is the requirement is a certain number of honors credits before graduation and an honors thesis. Again, no flipping idea what the deal is with A State. You could maybe try calling them to get their pitch, but I say come here; we’re totally better!
If you have any other questions, or if I did a super lousy job answering these then just ask and I’ll try to answer again.

Thank you so much! That is very helpful - I thought that Alfred State might be more of a technician school. I was really leaning towards Alfred University!
I have already signed up for Junior Discovery Day on April 11th. I’m looking forward to looking at the campus - it seems like a great school.
I am interested in mechanical engineering. Do you have any opinion on that program?
Thank you again for your time!

Alfred University by default, since it does offer engineering. Alfred State College does not offer engineering (it offers engineering technology).

See http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramSearch.aspx/AccreditationSearch.aspx to check for engineering degree programs.

I am not the most familiar with the Mechanical department, but when you come you should be shown more of what the mechies do. You’ll probably want to talk to a Professor, I think that Dr. Joe is the default, but don’t be intimidated by him if he talks to you about work load his viewpoint is a little skewed.

Haha, thank you! :)

Update: A senior materials science major actually was our tour guide. haha - The tour was great, and the school looks wonderful for materials and ceramics, but not so much for mechanical. I probably won’t be applying. Also, for those interested in Alfred, please note that the full ride for NMFs has been discontinued.

Thanks to everyone for their time!
