Alg2Trig at your school?

Hey everyone :)
Just out of curiosity, is Algebra 2/Trig an Honors class at your school?

I go to a very competitive public high school in California and I am a sophomore in Algebra 2/Trig. I and some other kids in my class have seen that most other high schools in our area (public AND private) have Algebra 2 Trig as a honors class.

Also, what do you have to do to make a class into an Honors class?

Thankss!

I took Alg II as a freshman and there was no trig involved - there's no flat-out trig course, either, which makes me wonder when we're actually going to get into it...anyone have any insight on this?

One usually takes Trigonometry with Precalculus. Some schools, however, like TJHSST incorporate it with A2/Trig and so subsequently, the middle schools wihth very advanced math students started teaching trig with Algebra 2. And then because the IB schools teach a2 wit trig everyones movin toward puttin it wit algebra 2. but traditionally its been with precalc.

Thanks, that sheds some light. I'm in precalc now so we'll likely get around to it. But wow, 8th graders know trig and I don't yet...that's scary.

This may be a really dumb question, but I've never been taught math with any of those names. What exactly is included in Alg II/ Trig?

Algebra 2 Trig is basically the sequel to the algebra 1 course and some trig. a lot of it is based on algebra 1. we have semesters, and as far as i know, we cover algebra 2 in first semester and trig in second semester.

ughh i hate how my teacher is rushing past the material. in 4 months we've gone through about 9 chapters. take a survey of the class and nobody's absorbed ANYTHING.

Okay. My school doesn't really give descriptive names to the math classes. We had advanced math in 9-10. And IB Math HL in 11-12. That doesn't tell you much- we've done algebra and trig, it was just never called that.

Our school's Honors AlgII/Trig Class goes a lot faster than the average Alg. II, and are usually done with the Alg. II curriculum standards by the thrid marking period, so they get a head start on Precalc.

We have an AlgII/Trig class and we have an Honors AlgII/Trig Class.

It goes like this in my school:

Algebra, Geometry, AlgII/Trig, Pre-calc, Calculus, Multivariable Calc

All courses are a year long.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones are also available as honors courses. Most people start with Geometry having taken Algebra in 8th grade. Some, however, start with Algebra, while a select few start with AlgII/Trig.
It takes a 95 average in the previous course and a teacher rec to get into an honors math class.

At my school, the order of math classes is

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trig, PreCalculus, Calculus AP or Statistics AP

The first 3 have honors and non-honors while PreCalculus is only Honors and Calc and Statistics are both AP.

Wow, I wish we had that policy. Classes would go so much quicker...

Our school is Alg I, Geometry (reg/pre-AP), Alg II (reg/pre-AP/GT), Pre-Calc (reg/pre-AP), Calc AB AP, Calc BC AP. And you can take Statistics sometime after algebra II, if you wish. I started with Alg II in 9th grade and am taking precalc and stat this year.

Oh, and I forgot to add that Calc is available as regular Calculus, AP Calulus AB or BC. It takes a special AP Calc placement test to get into those.

at my school, there's algebra 1, geometry (or geometry enriched), algebra 2 (or algebra2trig), math analysis (or pre calc h), then ap calc ab or bc.

Our school, like most, goes Alg. I, Geom, Alg II/Trig, Math Analysis (Pre-calc), and then AP Calc, either AB or BC. AP Stats is anytime after Alg II. For us, Alg II is either regular or accelerated. There is no change in the general curriculum, though. Math Analysis is either regular or honors (honors means it is weighted like an AP course, A = 5.0). Math Analysis Honors is a lot faster and covers the very beginning of calculus after spring break. However, even those from a regular MA class can take AP Calc BC the following year.

At my school Alg2Trig isn't called an Honors class, but it is. What's scary is that people take this class in like 9th grade and even in middle school. Wow. I wish I could have done that. But oh well.

At my school it goes like

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus, AB Calculus AP or Statistics AP

Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II/Trig, Math Analysis(Precalc & AP Calc AB), BC Calculus AP or Statistics AP

This is how we roll at muh Sk00l..

Algebra A and B (Alg. 1)
Algebra/Geometry
Geometry (honors or not)
Advanced Algebra (Alg. II)
Math Analysis (Alg. III)
*Discrete Math
Trigonometry w/Precalculus (moi in it)
Calculus 1 and 2 (Not an AP, though it 'prepares' some students for the AB and BC examination).

Elective and Quarter Class...though it requires Trig and Alg II.
*Also, theres that "Would you like Honors with that serving?" Option.

at my school, Algebra2trig is available as an honors or regular.

W/e. Math is for loosers. :)

At my school Trig is included in Algebra 2. I even had an introduction to Trig in my Hon. Algebra 1 class!

At my school, all math classes are offered at the honors level and regular level. However, once you get to Pre-Calculus it's automatically considered honors. So is Calculus. Also, you here you have to take Calculus, before you can take AP Calculus AB and the you have to take AB before you can take BC. The highest level of math that most kids get to that keep taking math is AB.

The students that do the honors courses take..

Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, Algebra 2 Honors, Precalculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC

Usually the students who take regular stop after Algebra 2 or if they go on, take Trig and that's it.
