Doubling up?

I received a 94.47 in Algebra 1 this quarter, I’m a freshman. I want to take Honors geometry and algebra 2 next year. Do you think I will be allowed with a 94 average?

Almost definitely, yes. Most schools just require you to have above a B- to be enrolled into honors classes. Some even allow you to do so even if you have a grade above C, as long as the teacher or principal approves.

Any other opinions? I’m just not sure because I want to take two honors math courses next year. I think a 94 average in honors algebra 1 would be enough, but I’m not sure. I would have a higher grade, but I missed a day of school and took my test early without reviewing which dropped me a little bit. I’ll definitely get a 96, or up this quarter! All my other grades are 95 and up, I’m planning on being a science major, so I know taking AP calculus in high school is very important.

Probably, but that’s dependent upon the policy of the HS.

In order to take calculus in HS, which you should, you either have to double up, or take a course over the summer (assuming the school allows).

A 94 is a solid A and if your school allows you to double up at all a then a 94 would most likely be sufficient.

That said, I wouldn’t recommend taking two honors math classes in the same year. Though geometry isn’t integral to algebra 2, often times textbook questions or even test questions will involve knowledge of geometry because it’s assumed that students have already taken it. Instead, I would highly recommend taking geometry over the summer if that is at all possible. Not only would you have finished geometry before you start algebra 2 but it would be a lot more fresh in your mind than your peers and you wouldn’t be rusty going into the school year.

(also, this is all coming from someone with personal experience in taking summer classes to get ahead)

@Itwixster It is not possible for me to take geometry over the summer, this is my only option. I’m going to have to take both next year if I want to take AP calculus. Other people are doing it, and they’re not having a problem.

In the same situation, my daughter’s math department recommended not doubling up but rather taking pre-calculus over the summer between junior and senior year so she could make it into calculus by 12th grade (if that is an option for you).

Thanks guys, I’ll talk to my counselor closer to scheduling and see what is the best option!

I doubled up on algebra 2 and geometry. I think its a much better option than trying to rush one class over the summer.
