I just got my contract which says I'm living in Alice Lloyd Hall this year and I couldn't be more excited. But it says I am in substance free... to what extent is that enforced by the dorm and will I still be able to "have the college experience" or will that limit what I am able to do?

Just don’t be an idiot. It’s not hard to drink in the dorms. Just keep your music at a reasonable level, don’t have like 15 people in your room, etc. All dorms are essentially substance free, since you’re most likely underage. I drank and smoked in substance free, never had a problem.

Bradymath — Are you an OSS?, if you are – is it worth $50K to get kicked out of UM just because you want to “have the college experience” - whatever that is?

^Lol…don’t let PeterW scare you, you’re not gonna get kicked out of the dorms for one or two incidents, much less the school as a whole. DPS can’t do anything unless you let them into your room. The worst that would happen is you’d get a warning or have a meeting with your hall director. Friends have been there, done that.

DPS can go into your room whenever they want, it is in your contract. You can do whatever you want in your rooms, just don’t be loud and they will never know. Smoking smells, meaning you will get caught. Quietly drinking will be fine.

DPS can’t do anything unless you let them, they call AAPD if you’re uncooperative. Kid was smoking a J in my hall and DPS couldn’t do anything lol.

I have to second what acta has said about doing stuff in your rooms, and the (un)likelihood of getting caught. I too had a kid in my hall who on multiple occasions smoked what had to be a metric ton of weed, and I mean it was blindingly obvious what was going on, so DPS came but literally did nothing because they simply can’t. While I would still argue the risks outweigh the benefits, especially when you can cross the street and risk less penalties, this isn’t exactly putting yourself on the line here.

I was caught with alcohol in my dorm room by DPS freshman year, mainly due to playing loud music and us being raucous in general. They essentially gave us all a slap on the wrist, told us to pour out the alcohol, and then went about their business. No MIP or anything. All you have to do is be cooperative and they’ll likely just give you a warning. The rest of the year I was just more careful about what I did and there was never any trouble.

In order to get kicked out of housing, you would probably need three or more infractions, or one or two very serious ones. To get kicked out of the school as a whole would require much more.

I’m fairly sure the “substance free” label is just there to give sheltered students and worrisome parents a little peace of mind, and so that students who choose to be substance free can live together in the same space. All of the dorms are 100% substance free by rule.
