Ok my piano teacher gave me this letter from the United States Achievment Academy and it says that my high school basketball coach (uses his real name) "officially selescted [me] as an All-American Scholar Award winner." So is this thing for real? My teamate who is a junior was also selected by my coach as a winner.

bump.....^^^

ne one know ne thing?

Do you need the $ and honor?

Don't fall for it - it's a scam. If they request ANY money,(even the smallest amount of money, b/c once you participate it, they're gonna request more)it DEFENITELY is a scam.

u dont need money to do nething, only if u want to purchase the yearbook with ur name in it

I am thinking scam also. If you do not buy the year book there is still a $15 charge. It's a brilliant scam though. They give themselves credibility with the teachers referral. My question is are the teachers receiving kcikbacks of prizes or commissions for sales through their referrals?

scam, don't fall for it

I am a teacher who nominates students. Several of our students have received scholarships in conjunction with all-american scholars.

Essentially it is a database of teacher nominated students. Does it mean you will get a scholarship, no. Does it give you access to apply to scholarships, yes. Can everyone apply for these scholarships, no (just the nominees).

Now, I always tell my students to only do the free stuff. Paying for the book or getting your picture in the registry is not needed to be considered for the scholarships. Some parents just like to get it just to see their childs name in it.

You will get in the book if you are nominated and usually receive a certificate of your nomination and usually acceptance.

For most students it is just a way that their teachers can acknowledge their hardwork and dedication in their class. No harm in that.

Why don’t you ask your coach?

ummm well i got nominated and my parents insisted on ordering trhe year book so we did … i had one page dedicated to me that was just in my book no one elses and my picture wasnt even in the real year book listing of all the students pictures or the list of their names… well that was $55 down the toilet

hello, well my football coach give me this letter and told me that i make all american scholar. i should apply for the usaa scholarship. i might going to get it.

I received this award several years ago as a college student and did not buy anything. I received a certificate and a letter verifying my accomplishment of being a USAA scholar.

I was able to use receiving this award to get other scholarship and recognitions, even as a graduate student.

I would FishProf’s advice - use it as a tool to get other scholarships, awards, recognitions, etc BUT don’t but anything (not necessary). I’m glad I didn’t buy the book back then - no one really cares about it but you and after a couple years, even you won’t care about the actual book. Same true for Who’s Who (which I did buy the book and it was pointless).

Hope this helps!
