All the people who got accepted to Hopkins

Can a score as low as 1280 get into Hopkins?

Highly unlikely, without a major hook or a 8-figure donation.

What if I apply ED?

Lower percentile admits in the ED round tend to be recruited athletes, children of major donors, etc.

You are free to take your chances, but I would spend your energy looking for colleges who share some of Hopkins characteristics, but where your scores fall above the 50% mark.

The mid-50% of SAT scores of class of 2023 accepted students was 1480-1550, so the 1280 is well below the 25%ile. https://apply.jhu.edu/discover-jhu/get-the-facts/

I doubt the 1280 is going to get even an ED application a strong look, hooked applicant or not…but of course I don’t know anything about the rest of your application. Obviously, you can apply to JHU, but you might strongly consider using your one ED opportunity at a better fit school.

Good luck.

Is UPenn a better choice then?

It’s difficult to advise you based on one parameter. UPenn Class of 2023’s admitted student mid-50% SAT was 1460-1550, very similar to JHU’s. https://admissions.upenn.edu/admissions-and-financial-aid/what-penn-looks-for/incoming-class-profile

You can check these stats yourself for any school. Generally, one does not want to be below the 25%ile in test scores or GPA. Most, but not all, admitted students below the 25%ile will have at least one hook.

Penn is not a better choice. Your SAT score is not competitive. Seriously, I know strong legacies with much higher scores that were denied admission.

Is there something on your resume that you think will appeal to JHU or Penn?

1280 is a good score - just not for the top schools. The competition is fierce.

One more thing…if the rest of your application is realistically strong enough to be in the mix at very selective schools, you may want to consider those that are test optional.

Good luck.

1280 would be fine for a recruited lacrosse player. However, Ivies generally want 1300 from recruited athletes.
