All the questions about courses required to get into Haas

Hello, I am going to be a freshman in Cal.
As the title says, I am in L&S, and I intend to get into Haas.
So I took some time and researched a bit about admission to Haas, and it seems like there are tons of prerequisite courses/ breadth courses I have to take.

Courses: Prerequesites- UBA 10, Math (1A,1B,16A, or 16B), Economics 1 or 2, Statistics 20,21, or 25, Literature/writing requirement, R&C requirements, and 7 breadth courses

[Admission Eligibility, Undergraduate Program - Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley](http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/ucbtransfer_eligibility.html)

So here comes my questions,

What is the difference between course names with A and B, are they semester classes that have to be taken together? ex) what is the difference between Math 1A and Math 1B

It seems I have a choice to take either Math1s or Math 16s. Apparently, Math 1s are more math oriented, and because I like math, I will probably choose Math 1s. What are advantages and disadvantages in taking Math1s, also how will advanced math classes like Math 53 help in my major?

Economics 1 or 2, which classes would you recommend, assuming I have almost no knowledge in economics even thought I took Ap macro economics…?

Stats 20,21, or 25, it seems all these classes look same. What are the differences, and what classes would you recommend?

Literature/ writing requirement, is this requiremnet the same writing requirement that every Cal students have to take? Can I pass this class if I have above 680 in Writing section of SAT ?

Final Question:
this is probably the most important question. It seems that I have to take approximately 14 major classes before I become a junior to apply to Haas. Assuming I take 15 credits each semester, which seems normal or a bit overloaded (rather, seems normal to Haas applicants I guess because Haas requires 60 semester credits to apply to Haas), I will tak 3~4 major classes each semester. This means that I have to devote all my two years filling up the requirements for Haas. Does this mean that I have no spare time to double major or minor in other fields, or even take some Decal classes that seem interesting?

These are some questions from a new Cal student who looks forward to his college life in Cal
Any answers to these questions would be appreciated ^^
Thank you,

I think the Math requirement means either 1 of those classes. So either 1A, 1B, 16A, OR 16B… Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Math 1A-B is much harder than Math 16A-B. Math 1A-B is considered a weeder sequence for the physical sciences and engineering, you should avoid Math 1A-B

Most people take A courses before B because they are a sequence. You should not take them at the same time. e.g. Math 1A limits, covers derivatives, basic integrals while Math 1B goes further with integral techniques and then some differential equations and such.

Lit/Writing req is separate from the R&C which is what every Cal student has to pass. This must be a course taken on the list provided by Haas.

With good planning, you can minor or double major. Most minors are upperdiv courses that you can work on once you do get into Haas. Keep in mind however, that no one is “guaranteed” into Haas so you need to plan for another major in case you don’t get into Haas. This means that in addition to the Haas courses, you have to take prereqs for other majors. There is always summer school. I find that some students do take 16-18 unit courseloads in second semester freshman year or sophomore year to make up for this.

I see… thanks for all the responses so far. So i guess I am going for Math 16s… and the questions is, am i supposed to take math 16 a in 1st semester and math 16b in second semester? i guess thats how the sequence goes… well the thing is i got 5 on calc bc…which means I can skip out form Calculus class… should I avoid taking math classes at all???
Also, to Stly, yes, I am aware that no one is guaranteed to Haas, I just want to get into Haas, thats my dream ;), if that fails I am probably going for econ major, and i know it is capped major… which makes everything harder, but I am guessing everything will be figured out by then…

and i guess I can overload myself a bit in 2nd semester in my freshman year >.>

any more answers to my other questions ~~~?

You don’t need it to do it first semester, you can do 16A in spring and then 16B in fall or even skip a semester between. However, I recommend not skipping a semester in between. It’s easy to forget some of the stuff.

Good luck! I heard for econ, math is required?

I guess I will take Math 16 A and Math 16B in my first year unless i get to skip whole calculus class
OR maybe for econ, I should take math classes…

Also, would someone like to provide their views about Econ 1 or 2, and Stats 20,21, or 25???

How is math 16A without any calculus background? Also, I’m thinking about taking Econ 1, math 16 A, a breadth course, and probably a decal class for my first semester at Cal. What is the difficulty level of econ 1? A lot of current students are telling me to stick to 13.0 units for my first semester and adjust to a heavier courseload once I’m used to it 2nd semester. I feel as though I am slacking off though…

there are some classes in L&S that give credit for both a breadth and the R&C because they’re challenging classes or something. does that same exception go for haas too?

Bump…

can anyone please discuss econ 1 vs. econ 2?

econ 1 looks easier so I am just going with that, haha. Is econ 2 even offered in fall…?

Okay can someone tell me if this looks correct i got 2A 2B 1C my gpa is to low can there be a mistake…SPRING 2009 (02/09/2009-06/08/2009)

still, no one has really answered my question: ECON 1 vs. ECON 2 anyone? Does it matter? How do the grade distribution differ? (and how do you check this too!) Thanks~

Are we supposed to take 2 math courses for Haas ? or just one ?

I’m not very sure what this means : Math (1A,1B,16A, or 16B)

We need to take both A and B … or just any ONE from the above four ?? I thought we couldn’t take B without A.

The Haas website says only ONE semester of calculus is required. Does this mean we only need to take one course?

1 semester of math, therefore one of those choices. You can take B without A, but it’s kind of a bad idea to.

but it says on the SCHEDULE OF CLASSES that a prereq for B is A.

nvm was thinking of somethign else with AP courses, so i’m not sure.
