All-USA High School Academic Team is no more

This is an e-mail I got from USA Today -

Dear students,

Thank you for your interest in the 2008 All-USA High School Academic Team.

Since the launch of the All-USA High School Academic Team in 1987, USA TODAY's All-USA Academic and Teacher Team programs have honored some of the nation's most outstanding students and teachers.

USA TODAY is committed to covering education and will continue to seek out stories about outstanding students and teachers. But due to budget cutbacks, the formal recognition programs have not been funded past the 2008 All-USA College Academic Team and All-USA Community College Academic Team, which are currently in judging.

We are sorry that All-USA High School Academic Teams and All-USA Teacher Teams will not be named in 2008. But we know the high school class of 2008 will go on to great things, and we’ll read about your accomplishments in the future.

All the best,

That's kind of sad. It was the all-around award to the best of the best.

Oh my god, I am so ****ed that they canceled this. That is really, really awful. I can't believe it happened to our year, too. Dammit! I wanted one, man. The All USA academic team was incredible every year, they always chose really well too.

what else is there that is similar to this? anything at all? urghhh.

I don't think so.
Indeed, this is a little bit depressing. But as mentioned in the email, I am sure that the class of 08 will go on and accomplish great things!

Good. It's pretentious.

Lol, I've never heard of this before... Meh, I haven't heard of 99% of the **** on CC though.

^^ ditto cono

Try the Presidential Scholarship.

hmm u kno in NJ the gov school was cancelled cuz of budget cuts, then they got funding from RICH PPL and now they still work

Great news! Every year I was so depressed when I read through the 1st Team profiles! Now I can be happy!

Haha, same here, Cono. CC makes me feel like I've been wasting my life.

LOL wow...well at least I dont have to worry about that then.

I felt that way at first lunar, but then I realized I'm glad I'm not too similar to these guys. They put way too much emphasis on high school, which you don't even need to attend to get into college. And then there's a ton of emphasis on your places of undergraduate studies as well, which really isn't that relevant if you go to grad school.

Cono, your comment is a bit off. You don't know that these kids put too much emphasis on high school. I've met a few of them at some of the top research competitions and they are just regular kids; they like to talk, play video games, play sports, etc. Just because someone has accomplished a lot doesn't mean they "put too much emphasis on high school".

Lol tay, I've been lurking the site long before I actually signed up.

You have no idea the type of CCers I'm referring to. The ones I'm talking about definitely aren't into 'playing sports.' Accomplishing a lot definitely has no relation whatsoever to high school in my opinion.

Well, I'm not necessarily talking about CCers, though I definitely do understand what you are talking about. I understand that the people who try to beat others by 1%, or join 9456730986 clubs put too much emphasis on high school in many cases. But the accomplishments we are talking about here (for usa hs acad. team) involve music, research etc. which "transcend" high school.

Even though I only had the very very very slimest (i know bad grammar) of chances (no research or big fund-raiser but not gonna cry over it haha), I am sad that USA Today won't continue to recognize those high school students who truly have made a difference in the world.
