My daughter and I just returned from a great visit to Allegheny College. The campus is beautiful and everyone we met made us feel very welcome. My daughters only hesitation is that Allegheny does not have an Education major, as she is thinking about a career in Elementary Ed. On the outside chance that there is an Allegheny student out there who plans to teach at the K-12 level, Id be interested in hearing about the route you are taking to prepare yourself.

I’d like to hear about this too. Our son is interested in teaching secondary school biology. I did send an e-mail to a person mentioned at the Allegheny College website.

Our concern is that ther eis no field experience until graduate school

You can do internships in education
read about it here.

I remember one our tour guides talking about how easy it was to set up internships in the local schools

We just toured last week, my daughter also really liked it. The arrangement with Pitt seems great and very similar to a program at Duquesne which I had encouraged her to consider. The duquesne program offers a bachelors in certain sciences then with a fifth year, a masters in education. Most states now require a masters to get permanent certification. Check out Allegheny’s web site regarding the connection with Pitt to earn the teaching masters after Allegheny. I believe I saw it under the tab where majors were listed, under “education”. Good luck!
